Chapter 3 - The Intruding Passenger

The digital lock on the heavy reinforced cockpit door clicked open with a definitive, mechanical thud.

Avery’s blood ran cold. In the middle of an airborne emergency at 31,000 feet, while fighting a compromised flight computer and an incoming wall of severe weather, the secure barrier protecting the flight deck had just been unlocked from the outside.

"Nolan," Avery whispered urgently into her headset, her eyes fixed on the creeping crack of the door. "Someone is overriding the cockpit security lock from the cabin. I have an unauthorized intruder."

"What?" Nolan’s voice spiked with disbelief. "Avery, lock it manually! Use the mechanical deadbolt lever on the center console!"

Avery lunged across the console, her fingers wrapping around the heavy steel deadbolt bar and throwing it into its locked position just as the door swung violently inward.

A man’s shoulder slammed against the reinforced barrier.

"Open the door, Miss Sutton," a calm, chillingly polite voice spoke from the galleyway.

Avery recognized the voice instantly. It belonged to Martin Vale—the man from seat 12F who had struck up a casual conversation with her about aviation systems just minutes before the tragedy began.

"Who are you?" Avery demanded, her voice echoing in the cramped cockpit as she kept one hand glued to the yoke. "What did you do to the pilots?"

"Just a mild, fast-acting neurotoxin slipped into the crew’s pre-flight coffee service," Martin replied smoothly through the reinforced panel, his tone as casual as if he were discussing the weather. "Completely untraceable. They’ll wake up with severe migraines in a hospital tomorrow, provided there's an aircraft left for them to return to."

In the background, Nolan’s frantic voice bled through the headset: "Avery! Who is that? We're tracking a suspicious passenger manifest match right now—Martin Vale is an alias linked to an international corporate espionage syndicate!"

"They want the plane, Nolan," Avery realized aloud, her eyes darting across the instrument panel. "The sabotage command... it wasn't meant to crash us in the mountains. It was meant to lock me out of the primary avionics so an external autopilot relay could take over via remote link. They’re trying to hijack the aircraft mid-air and fly it to an unlisted airstrip!"

"Very perceptive for a freshman," Martin’s voice drifted through the door, accompanied by the metallic scraping sound of a heavy tool—likely an override key or an electronic de-coder—working against the keypad circuitry. "You have about forty seconds before my device bypasses the physical deadbolt, Avery. You can save yourself a lot of trouble if you simply step away from the controls and open the door."

Avery looked down at Captain Mercer, who was still unconscious beside her, and then out the windshield. The massive wall of the Arkansas squall line loomed ahead like a jagged mountain range of purple and black clouds. Lightning flashed inside the boiling mass, illuminating the fierce turbulence waiting for them.

If Martin gained control of the flight deck, he would steer the Boeing straight into the storm, using the chaos of the weather to cover their diversion off the radar. And 186 innocent passengers would vanish along with the aircraft.

"I'm not opening the door," Avery said, her voice steadying with a sudden, fierce wave of absolute resolve.

"Avery, listen to me," Nolan’s voice cut in sharply. "The military interceptor is two minutes out, but you are about to hit the outer bands of that squall. If you don't turn hard right right now, you'll fly straight into microburst territory."

Avery looked at the override keypad. The tiny indicator light was flashing from red to green. The de-coder was almost finished breaking the manual deadbolt circuit.

She didn't hesitate.

Instead of freezing, Avery reached down, grabbed the emergency fuel jettison override switch, and deliberately flipped it into manual dump mode, routing raw fuel directly into the engine's afterburner bypass line to create an intentional, massive engine pressure spike.

"Hold on, Nolan," Avery whispered.

Then, with her left hand, she slammed the throttles fully forward into takeoff-go-around (TOGA) power.

The twin jet engines roared to a deafening, ear-splitting crescendo, vibrating the entire airframe with bone-shaking intensity. The sudden, violent surge of thrust created an instantaneous massive G-force acceleration inside the cabin.

Outside the door, a sudden, startled shout rang out as Martin Vale was violently thrown backward against the galley cart by the sudden surge of acceleration.

The heavy thud of a body hitting the floor echoed through the partition.

Avery didn't wait to see if he got back up. She hauled back hard on the yoke, driving the nose of the Boeing straight up into the vertical face of the oncoming storm, leaving the would-be hijacker trapped, battered, and helpless behind the locked door.
