Chapter 5 - Wings of a Hero

The touchdown was not the smoothest landing in commercial aviation history, but under the circumstances, it was nothing short of miraculous.

The main landing gear hit the tarmac of Memphis International with a firm, solid thud, followed immediately by the deafening roar of thrust reversers engaging and spoilers deploying. Avery kept her hands steady on the yoke, manually steering the heavy jet down the centerline of the runway as speed bled away from the airframe.

Sirens wailed in the distance as a convoy of fire trucks, police cruisers, and medical vans raced alongside the taxiway, escorting the battered Boeing to a safe remote apron.

Avery pulled the fuel cutoff levers, silencing the massive engines. The sudden quiet inside the flight deck was absolute, broken only by the hum of cooling avionics and the steady, shallow breathing of Captain Mercer, who was beginning to stir faintly in his seat.

Avery leaned back against her seat, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like it had been trapped in her chest for a lifetime. Her hands were shaking now—the adrenaline crash hitting her all at once.

The cockpit door behind her clicked, the mechanical deadbolt retracting.

Renee Walsh rushed in, her face pale, followed immediately by two heavily armed airport security officers and federal agents who moved past her to secure the galley area where Martin Vale had been subdued and zip-tied by crew members moments after the engine surge.

Renee stared at Avery, her eyes wide with unspeakable awe and gratitude.

"Avery..." Renee whispered, her voice breaking as she reached out and gently touched the teenager's shoulder. "Everyone is safe. Every single passenger is alive."

Avery looked up, offering a tired, fragile smile. "Is the doctor checking on the captain?"

"Yes. They're both going to be fine," Renee said, tears spilling over her lashes. She pulled Avery into a fierce, protective embrace. "You saved all of us, kid. You saved 186 lives."

Outside the aircraft windows, as the sun dipped low over the horizon, casting a golden glow across the tarmac, hundreds of faces pressed against the terminal windows. Cell phone cameras flashed like a sea of distant stars, and even from inside the cabin, Avery could hear the muffled, swelling sound of cheering echoing against the fuselage.

Two days later, the front page of every major national newspaper featured a crisp photograph of a nineteen-year-old college freshman in a navy university sweatshirt, walking out of the terminal under her own power, her aerodynamics textbook still clutched tightly beneath her arm.

The FAA announced a sweeping security overhaul of all commercial flight management systems, citing Avery's quick-thinking intervention as the catalyst that uncovered a dangerous international sabotage network.

And back at Western Plains University, when Avery finally walked back into her campus simulator lab a week later, the Dean of Aviation tried to shake her hand and offer her an honorary senior standing.

Avery politely shook her head, smiled, and sat back down in her favorite simulator chair, adjusting her headset.

She still had two thousand more hours of practice to log.
