Chapter 4 - The Ascent Through Hell

Up on the fourth-floor private mezzanine, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Camille’s wrists were bound tightly behind her back with industrial plastic ties that dug painfully into her skin. Two heavily armed operatives dragged her down the dimly lit hallway toward the rooftop helipad exit. Her elegant evening dress was torn at the hem, her hair was disheveled, and the cold, unyielding armor of her corporate confidence had completely shattered.

"Keep moving, tech queen," the leader snarled, shoving her forward roughly. "Your friends at Ashford Capital are going to enjoy watching you sign over your data architecture keys at gunpoint tonight."

"You won't get away with this," Camille spat, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound brave. "The authorities—"

"The authorities are currently locked out of this entire three-block radius by our jamming units," the leader laughed darkly, pushing open the heavy fire door leading to the roof.

A chilling blast of wind hit them as they stepped out onto the wide, open concrete helipad. A black, unmarked twin-engine Eurocopter sat idling in the center of the roof, its rotor blades whipping up a blinding vortex of dust and debris. The extraction team had executed the kidnapping with terrifying precision.

Or at least, they thought they had.

Before the leader could push Camille toward the helicopter cabin, a sharp, suppressed pfft-pfft echoed over the roar of the rotors.

The mercenary standing guard near the chopper’s landing skid suddenly stiffened, his eyes going wide before collapsing limp onto the concrete, a tranquilizer dart buried deep in his tactical vest.

"Contact!" the leader roared, instantly shoving Camille behind a concrete HVAC housing and drawing his carbine. "We've got a perimeter breach! Cover the access stairwell!"

From the shadows of the stairwell exit, a single figure emerged.

He wasn't wearing tactical body armor. He wore a simple, dark grey civilian jacket, combat boots, and carried a suppressed Sig Sauer held in a textbook two-handed isosceles grip. His dark eyes were dead, focused, and utterly devoid of fear.

It was Rowan.

"What the hell?" the leader cursed over the radio comms. "Who is that? Shoot him! Terminate on sight!"

Two operatives charged toward the stairwell, unleashing a devastating wall of automatic gunfire that chewed the concrete walls to powder. Shrapnel flew everywhere, and the deafening roar of assault rifles rattled across the rooftop.

Rowan didn't flinch. He dropped smoothly into a combat slide beneath the line of fire, coming up behind a concrete pillar. In one fluid, terrifyingly graceful motion, he snapped off three rapid shots.

Pop. Pop. Pop.

Three precise rounds struck home. Both operatives dropped their weapons, clutching their non-lethal impact zones as the high-velocity rubber-and-lead hybrid rounds put them down instantly.

The leader stared in sheer disbelief. This wasn't a standard corporate driver. This was an apex predator who moved through a firefight like a ghost through smoke.

"Kill him! Blow him away!" the leader screamed, dragging Camille up by her hair and pressing the cold barrel of his pistol directly against her temple.

Camille gasped, tears streaming down her face as she looked across the concrete at the man she had fired less than an hour ago.

"Rowan..." she choked out, her voice breaking. "Stop... they'll kill you..."

Rowan stopped moving. He lowered his weapon by a single inch, his eyes locking onto hers across the windy expanse of the roof.

"You should have listened to my warning, Ms. Westbrook," Rowan said calmly, his voice cutting clearly through the roaring wind of the helicopter blades.

"Mercer!" the leader shrieked, his finger trembling on the trigger pressed against Camille's temple. "Drop your weapon right now, or I turn her brain into paste! Drop it!"

Rowan stared at the leader. Then, very slowly, he let his pistol slide from his grip. It clattered loudly against the concrete floor.

The leader grinned maniacally, tightening his grip on Camille’s hair. "Smart dog. Now get on your knees and put your hands behind your head, or—"

The leader never finished his sentence.

What the leader didn't know—what nobody in Westbrook Dynamics knew—was that Rowan’s weapon drop wasn't a surrender. It was a distraction.

While the leader was gloating, his eyes fixed entirely on Rowan, a tiny, glowing red dot appeared on the center of the leader's tactical helmet. From the adjacent skyscraper roof two hundred yards away, Rowan’s pre-positioned sniper overwatch—a fellow former SEAL team operator he had called in the second he saw the tracking device—quietly squeezed the trigger of a suppressed .338 Lapua Magnum.

A dull, subsonic thud echoed across the night sky.

The leader's helmet shattered into a cloud of Kevlar shards and synthetic resin. He dropped instantly like a severed puppet, dead before his body hit the concrete.

Camille screamed, stumbling forward as the weight of her captor released her.

Before she could hit the ground, strong, steady hands caught her by the waist, pulling her out of the line of fire and dragging her safely behind the concrete barricade.

Rowan knelt beside her, his expression completely calm as he pulled out a specialized pocket knife and sliced cleanly through the plastic zip-ties biting into her wrists.

"You're safe now, Ms. Westbrook," Rowan said softly, rubbing her bruised wrists with a gentle touch that contrasted sharply with the deadly violence that had just unfolded.

Camille stared at him, her chest heaving, the billionaire empire she had built suddenly feeling infinitely small compared to the man sitting in front of her.

"Who... what are you?" she whispered, tears cutting clean paths through her makeup.

May you like

Rowan offered her a faint, tired smile, standing up and extending a calloused hand to help her to her feet.

"Just your former driver, ma'am," he said quietly. "Though I think my resume needs updating."
