Chapter 5 - The New Foundation

The morning sun rose over Chicago, painting the glass towers of Westbrook Dynamics in brilliant shades of gold and amber. The streets below were swarming with local police cruisers, FBI counter-terrorism units, and flashing red and blue lights, but inside the private 43rd-floor corner office, the room was remarkably still.

The Ashford Capital merger hadn't just survived the night; it had been permanently secured. When Malcolm Rice and the rest of the investment committee learned how Rowan Mercer single-handedly dismantled an elite corporate kidnapping syndicate to protect the company's leadership, the contract wasn't just signed—it was doubled in value.

Victor Langley was currently sitting in the back of a federal squad car down on the street, arrested alongside two corrupt hotel security insiders who had sold the facility blueprints to the mercenaries.

Inside the office, Camille Westbrook stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a crisp new blazer, looking out over the city skyline.

There was a soft knock at the heavy oak door.

"Come in," she said.

The door swung open, and Rowan stepped inside. He wasn't wearing his driver's uniform anymore. He wore a well-fitted dark charcoal suit that completely transformed his presence, though his eyes retained that same quiet, hyper-vigilant sharpness that had saved her life.

In his hand, he held a cardboard box containing a few personal items from his desk.

"I'm here to hand in my final badge, Ms. Westbrook," Rowan said evenly, stepping toward the mahogany desk. "HR said my processing is complete."

Camille turned around. She looked at the box, then looked up into his dark, steady eyes.

For the first time since she had founded Westbrook Dynamics, the all-powerful billionaire CEO looked genuinely hesitant.

"You saved my life, Rowan," she said, her voice soft, carrying none of the ice that had defined her leadership style for years. "You saved my company, my investors, and my future. And all I did yesterday was humiliate you, fire you, and throw your keys in the dirt."

"You made a business decision based on the information you had at the time," Rowan replied stoically. "I understand protocol."

"Protocol?" Camille let out a quiet, self-deprecating laugh, shaking her head. She walked around the desk until she was standing just two feet away from him. "For fourteen months, you drove me around this city, watched my back without asking for praise, and quietly kept me alive while I treated you like furniture."

She reached down, took the cardboard box out of his hands, and set it firmly on the edge of the desk.

"I don't need a driver anymore, Rowan," Camille said, her voice steady and resolute. "What I need—what Westbrook Dynamics desperately needs—is a Chief Security Officer who actually knows what he's doing. Someone who sees the threats before they materialize. Someone I can actually trust with my life."

Rowan blinked, surprised for the first time in a very long time. A slow, respectful smile touched the corner of his mouth.

"That's a significant promotion from driving a Mercedes," Rowan noted.

"Consider it back-pay for hazard duty," Camille replied, extending her hand across the polished wood. "Starting salary is triple what you were making, full medical benefits for your daughter, and absolute operational autonomy over every security detail in this corporation."

Rowan looked down at her outstretched hand. The cold, untouchable tech titan was gone, replaced by a woman who had finally learned the true value of loyalty and quiet strength.

He reached out and shook her hand, his grip firm, warm, and unbreakable.

"Deal, boss," Rowan said.

Camille smiled, feeling a weight lift from her shoulders for the first time in years. The empire she had built was no longer built on glass and arrogance; it was finally built on solid ground.
