Chapter 4 - The Confrontation and the Stolen Truth

The air in the hallway turned instantly toxic.
Gabriel Vaughn stepped past Mrs. Odette, ignoring her protests, and strode directly into the apartment. His eyes were fixed entirely on Isla, who shrank back against the kitchen counter, her hands trembling as she clutched Junie's star-printed blanket to her chest like a shield.
"Isla," Gabriel said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying a complex mixture of raw fury and profound relief. "Do you have any idea what you've put me through? Running away with that ledger... are you out of your mind?"
"You weren't going to let me leave, Gabriel!" Isla cried out, her voice cracking with years of suppressed trauma. "I found the papers! I found the truth about what you and your brothers did to my real family! 'Not of the same blood'—I'm not your sister at all, am I? I'm just a hostage you kept around to look like a merciful guardian!"
Gabriel stopped dead in his tracks. The imposing, untouchable mafia boss flinched as if he had been struck across the face with a lead pipe.
Meredith stepped between them, her protective maternal instincts overriding her fear of the dangerous men filling her home. "Back off! She was dying in an alleyway when I found her! If you're going to hurt her, you'll have to go through me first!"
Gabriel slowly shifted his gaze from Isla down to Meredith. For a terrifying second, Meredith thought he might draw a weapon and end them both right there. Instead, a strange, heavy sigh escaped his lips, and the fierce hostility in his posture evaporated, replaced by a deep, weary sorrow.
"Mrs. Cole," Gabriel said quietly, astonishing Meredith by using her name. "You saved her life. That gives you my protection for the rest of your days. But you don't understand the storm she walked into."
"I understand enough," Meredith shot back, her chin held high. "I understand that she's terrified of you."
"She read a half-truth," Gabriel said, turning his gaze back to Isla. He reached slowly into his inner coat pocket and pulled out a clean, sealed legal envelope, placing it gently on the kitchen table. "Open it, Isla. Read the whole document, not just the single line you stole from my desk."
Isla hesitated, her breath catching in her throat. With shaking fingers, she tore open the envelope, unfolded the heavy parchment paper, and scanned the dense legal text.
As her eyes raced across the lines, the color drained completely from her face.
"...And whereas the adoption was finalized under seal to protect the child from rival syndicates... verification confirms she is indeed legally adopted, yet bound by blood-pact loyalty to the Vaughn estate..."
Isla looked up, tears blurring her vision. "It... it wasn't a betrayal? You adopted me to protect me?"
"My father killed your real parents, Isla," Gabriel said, his voice thick with a pain he rarely allowed anyone to see. "When I took over the syndicate, I couldn't undo what he did. But I could keep you safe under my roof by making you my sister in the eyes of the underworld. The line you read... it was part of a security protocol to keep rival families from using you as leverage against me. But you ran before I could tell you."

Isla broke down completely, dropping the papers as she fell to her knees, sobbing into her hands. Gabriel crossed the room in two long strides, dropping down beside her and pulling her into a fierce, protective embrace—the kind of hug only a fiercely loyal older brother could give.
Meredith watched them, feeling the heavy knot in her chest finally begin to untie.
