Chapter 5 - A New Alliance and a Safe Haven

One week later, the dingy third-floor apartment felt remarkably different.
A sleek black town car sat idling outside the building, its tinted windows gleaming against the morning snow. Upstairs, packing boxes were neatly stacked near the door, though Meredith wasn't leaving her life behind—she was simply upgrading it to a chapter she never dared dream possible.
Gabriel Vaughn sat at the small kitchen table across from Meredith, sipping a cup of black coffee that Odette had poured him. Junie sat happily in the corner, playing with a brand-new set of educational toys that had mysteriously arrived the day before, courtesy of a very grateful "Uncle Gabriel."
"You don't have to keep working at that laundry service, Meredith," Gabriel said, his voice firm yet respectful. "The foundation I'm setting up in Isla's honor needs a director. Someone with integrity, grit, and a heart big enough to pull a stranger out of the snow."
Meredith looked over at Isla, who was smiling brightly as she helped pack the last of her belongings into a designer suitcase. The terror that had haunted Isla's eyes the night they met was gone, replaced by a quiet, resilient strength.
"I'm not a charity case, Gabriel," Meredith warned with a slight smile. "I earn my keep."
"I know you do," Gabriel replied, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips. "That's why I'm offering you a job, not a handout."
That afternoon, as Meredith locked apartment fourteen for the final time and stepped into the warm leather interior of the town car alongside Isla, Junie, and Mrs. Odette, she looked out the window at the Chicago skyline.

The city was still cold, and the underworld beneath it was still dangerous. But as Gabriel slid into the front seat and gave the driver a secure destination, Meredith realized something profound: sometimes, stepping into the dark to help a stranger was the only way to find the light that would save your own life.
The war had nearly destroyed them all, but kindness had built a bridge stronger than any mafia bloodline.
