Chapter 4 - The Trap Closes

As Victoria turned away from the hospital bed to discard the empty syringe into a biohazard bin, I heard heavy footsteps approaching from the hidden staircase behind me.

Damn it. Someone else was coming down.

I slipped away from the door just as the stairwell latch clicked open. I pressed myself flat against the dark concrete wall behind a massive industrial ventilation unit, my heart pounding in my throat.

A familiar voice echoed through the damp corridor—smooth, arrogant, and chillingly casual.

"Mom? Is the sedative taking effect? The attorneys from Boston are calling my cell asking if the trust restructuring documents are signed yet."

It was Daniel.

He walked past my hiding spot by inches, his tailored suit jacket slung over his shoulder, loosening his silk tie as he entered the medical ward.

"She’s quiet now," Victoria replied, her voice drifting out from the room. "The dosage is locked in. Once she signs the asset transfer waiver tomorrow morning under supervision, we can finally dissolve her legal guardianship status permanently."

"Good," Daniel sighed, walking over to check the monitors. "Claire is entirely off the scent. She bought the whole 'difficult sister with digestive issues' routine completely. Women like that only see what you allow them to see. By the time we’re married, all of Emily’s equity will be safely transferred into our joint corporate holdings."

Hearing those words spoken aloud—hearing the man I had agreed to marry casually discuss drugging his own sister while using me as a disposable pawn—sent a cold wave of absolute, freezing rage through my veins. Every doubt vanished. Every shred of hesitation evaporated.

I didn't back down. I stepped out from behind the ventilation unit, my phone held firmly in my hand with the live video feed still streaming directly to Maya and the state police database.

"Is that right, Daniel?" my voice rang out, sharp and crystal clear through the damp concrete corridor.

The room went dead silent.

Victoria spun around from the hospital bed, her face turning the color of ash. Daniel whipped his head toward the doorway, his confident smile instantly shattering into sheer, unadulterated panic as he saw me standing there in the shadows.

"Claire?" Daniel breathed, taking a panicked step forward. "What... what are you doing here? How did you—"

"I told you, Daniel," I said, stepping fully into the fluorescent light, my gaze locked onto his terrified eyes with razor-sharp precision. "I work in corporate compliance. And I specialize in tracing hidden assets and fraudulent manipulation. But tonight, I found something much more interesting: premeditated felony kidnapping, assault, and attempted medical murder."

Victoria lunged toward the alarm button on the wall, her face twisting with venom. "Get her! Stop her from—"

Before her fingers could hit the panel, I raised my phone, holding the screen toward them like a shield.

"Don't even think about it, Victoria," I said calmly, my voice steady as a rock. "That live feed isn't just recording locally. Maya has the direct GPS coordinates, the encrypted video files, and the state police dispatch squad was automatically triggered the second I entered this restricted sector. They’re currently turning down your private lane right now. Estimated arrival time: four minutes."

Daniel froze, staring at the flashing red recording light on my phone as the terrifying reality of what he had lost came crashing down around him. His multi-million-dollar career, his pristine reputation, his freedom—all of it dismantled in less than five minutes by the woman he thought he had completely outsmarted.

Sirens began to wail in the distance, cutting sharply through the quiet night air outside the Mercer estate.
