Chapter 3 - The Hospital Curtain Opens

The fluorescent lights of Saint Anthony Medical Center's emergency wing hummed with a sterile, clinical chill as I walked briskly down the polished corridors at 2:45 in the morning. A young resident doctor intercepted me near nurses' station three, looking pale, exhausted, and desperately hoping he was trapped in a very bizarre nightmare.
"Mrs. Vance?" he asked, wiping sweat from his forehead. "I'm Dr. Hayes. I'm heading the medical team handling... well, handling room four."
"Take me to them, Doctor," I commanded quietly, my voice carrying an absolute authority that brooked no argument.
Dr. Hayes swallowed hard and led me down to the trauma curtain at the end of the hall. He pushed the heavy fabric privacy screen back just enough for me to step inside.
The scene unfolding before my eyes was a masterclass in cosmic irony.
Lying side-by-side on two hospital gurneys pushed tightly together under a sterile white sheet were my husband Julian and my sister-in-law Serena. Their faces were flushed bright crimson with absolute mortification. Serena had a hospital pillow clutched desperately over her face, whimpering softly in sheer terror, while Julian looked like a man who had just been dragged through a mechanical threshing machine.
When Julian’s eyes locked onto mine standing beside the bed, all the color drained instantly from his face, leaving him looking chalk-white and sickly.
"Elena..." Julian gasped, his voice cracking with panic as he tried to shift position, only to wince in sharp physical agony as the industrial adhesive held fast. "Honey... please... listen to me. This is all a horrific misunderstanding. It’s not what it looks like!"
I didn't blink. I slowly stepped closer to the gurney, folded my arms across my tailored black blazer, and looked down at my husband with an expression so freezing and devoid of warmth that the attending nurse visibly stepped back.
"Really, Julian?" I asked, my voice carrying a razor-sharp edge. "Since when do you give therapeutic massages to my brother’s wife at two o'clock in the morning in a downtown love nest?"
Serena lowered the pillow slightly from her face, her eyes wide, bloodshot, and filled with sheer terror. "Elena... please don't tell Brandon. If Brandon finds out, he'll kill us both. You know how volatile his temper is!"
"Oh, you're worried about Brandon?" I retorted smoothly, pulling the thick leather investigative folder out from under my arm and slamming it down onto the metal bedside tray with a loud, metallic clatter that made both of them flinch.
I unclasped the folder and began spreading glossy photographs, bank statements, hotel receipts, and corporate transfer records across the tray right in front of their trapped faces.
"Look at these, Julian," I said, pointing to the hotel bills and financial printouts. "Six months of luxury getaways funded by corporate embezzlement and joint savings accounts. And just in case your memory is failing you, let's refresh it with some audio."
I pulled out my phone, tapped the screen, and cranked the volume up to maximum. The clear, arrogant voice of my husband echoed loudly off the sterile hospital walls for every doctor, nurse, and passing orderly to hear:
“I'm not divorcing Elena. Her family's voting shares in Vance Global are worth exponentially more to me while I’m legally her husband than they’ll ever be after I leave. Staying married to her is my golden ticket...”
The recording played on repeat for a second before I hit stop. The silence in the trauma bay was absolute, heavy, and suffocating.
Serena burst into hysterical, uncontrollable sobbing, burying her face back into the pillow. Julian stared at the phone in sheer horror, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water as he stammered, "You... you had us followed? You set me up! This is entrapment!"
"Entrapment?" I laughed coldly, leaning in close so only the two of them could hear. "Getting married to steal my family's legacy and sleeping with my brother's wife was the real trap, Julian. And you walked right into it naked."
Without waiting another second, I pulled out my cell phone, dialed a familiar number, and put it on speaker. It rang twice before a gruff, sleep-roughened voice answered.

"Hello? Elena? Why are you calling me at three in the morning? Is something wrong?" my brother Brandon’s voice boomed through the speaker.
"Brandon," I said steadily, my eyes locked on Julian’s terrified face. "Get dressed right now and drive down to Saint Anthony Medical Center in Denver. Bring your jacket. You need to see what your wife and my husband have been up to."
