Chapter 4 - The Confrontation and the Safe Combination

It took Brandon exactly twenty-two minutes to break every speed limit between Boulder and Denver.

When he stormed through the emergency room doors, his hair disheveled, his jacket half-zipped, and his shoes soaked from the pouring rain, he looked like an avenging angel of wrath. A security guard tried to intercept him, but I stepped forward and shook my head, signaling them to let him pass.

Brandon marched directly down the corridor, pulled back the privacy curtain of trauma bay four, and stopped dead in his tracks.

The sight of his wife Serena—still physically bonded to my husband Julian under a hospital sheet—hit Brandon with the force of a physical blow. For two seconds, he didn't make a sound. His broad chest rose and fell in heavy, ragged breaths, his knuckles turning pure white as his fists clenched so tightly his fingernails dug into his palms.

"Brandon..." Serena whimpered from the gurney, her voice trembling violently. "Brandon, please, let me explain! It was all Julian! He manipulated me! He pursued me relentlessly and pressured me into this affair!"

"What?!" Julian shrieked, his self-preservation instinct instantly overriding any remaining loyalty to his mistress. "Are you out of your damn mind, Serena?! You threw yourself at me! You chased me down every weekend, begging me to leave Elena so we could run off together! You're a lying, manipulative snake!"

"Shut up! Both of you shut your filthy mouths!" Brandon roared, his voice shaking the medical equipment on the tray.

Before the nurses could react, Brandon lunged forward with the raw, explosive fury of a betrayed husband. Two male orderlies and a security guard tackled him around the waist just inches from the gurney, dragging him backward as Brandon thrashed and yelled, "I'm going to tear you both apart! You disgusting animals!"

"Mr. Vance! You need to calm down immediately or we will have you removed from the hospital!" Dr. Hayes shouted, stepping between Brandon and the bed.

Serena was sobbing hysterically, screaming that her life was ruined, while Julian was frantically begging me to call my brother off. The entire emergency bay had turned into a chaotic circus of exposed lies, broken marriages, and shattered alliances. Six months of secret promises and whispered conspiracies had completely collapsed in less than sixty seconds because neither of them possessed an ounce of loyalty once the truth had real, undeniable consequences.

Amidst the screaming, Dr. Hayes pushed his way through the chaos and turned directly to me, looking exhausted and desperate. "Mrs. Vance, we need your formal authorization right now. Our chemical engineering consultants have finally approved a specialized medical solvent procedure to safely separate them, but it requires your signed consent as legal next-of-kin."

I looked down at Julian, who was sweating profusely, his eyes darting frantically between me and Brandon.

"I'll sign it," I said calmly, pulling a pen from my designer handbag. "On one condition."

Julian’s eyes widened in sheer panic. "What condition? Elena, name it! Just sign the papers!"

"You're going to give me the exact combination to the heavy digital safe hidden in your home office," I said, my voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "Right now. In front of witnesses."

That was the very first moment all night when Julian looked truly, fundamentally terrified. He could handle the humiliation of being stuck to another woman, he could handle Brandon’s rage, and he could handle my cold investigative evidence. But the mere mention of that office safe changed his face from panic to absolute mortal terror.

"Elena... no... not the safe," Julian stammered, shaking his head frantically, his voice dropping to a desperate plea. "Please, anything else! Take the car, take the bank accounts, take the house! But don't ask for the safe!"

"The safe, Julian," I repeated, tapping my pen against the clipboard with deliberate slowness. "Or I walk out of this hospital right now and leave you two stuck together for the next forty-eight hours while media outlets and corporate board members find out why you're missing."

Julian swallowed hard, his chest heaving as he realized he had completely run out of options. With a defeated, broken expression, he whispered a string of numbers: "Fourteen-twenty-eight-fifty-six-right, twenty-two-left."

I jotted the numbers down on the back of a business card, smiled sweetly at Dr. Hayes, and signed the consent form across the dotted line.

"Proceed with the separation, Doctor," I said smoothly. "Make sure it hurts."

As the medical staff wheeled Julian and Serena away toward the surgical suite on rolling gurneys—still firmly attached and wailing in protest—Brandon stood beside me in the quiet hallway, wiping rain from his face and asking the question that was already burning in my own mind:

"Elena... what on earth is my husband and your husband keeping in that safe that has him looking like he's facing a firing squad?"
