Chapter 3 - The Lockdown

“Who the hell do you think you are?!” Claire screamed, finding her voice as she scrambled to her feet, shaking with a mixture of blind rage and sheer terror. “This is private property! I am calling the police right now! You’re breaking and entering! You’re all going to prison!”
Stone stood up smoothly, holding Lily securely in his left arm while keeping his right hand resting casually on his utility belt. He turned his piercing gaze toward Claire, a cold, predatory smile cutting across his face.
“Go ahead, Mrs. Reed,” Stone said smoothly, stepping toward the kitchen landline and pulling the cord straight out of the wall. “Call whoever you want. But just so you know, local police units were already dispatched ten minutes ago by the Colonel himself. And federal child protective services investigators are currently en route with emergency federal warrants signed by a military magistrate.”
Marlene finally struggled to her feet, her face purple with indignation and aristocratic rage. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger straight at Stone’s chest. “Do you have any idea who my family is?! My husband was a superior court judge! My friends control the county commission! You thugs are going to spend the rest of your natural lives behind bars for terrorizing a respectable home!”
“Respectable home?” Stone chuckled darkly, shaking his head. “Lady, you just committed aggravated assault, child endangerment, and psychological torture against the daughter of a decorated combat colonel on a recorded security feed that has already been backed up to three separate Department of Defense secure servers. You aren't dealing with local cops who can be bought off with county politics. You’re dealing with the United States military justice system.”
At that exact moment, the wailing sirens of local police cruisers echoed loudly from the street outside, pulling up directly in front of the house with flashing red and blue lights illuminating the living room windows through the blinds.
Tessa and Natalie began hyperventilating on the sofa, realizing with sudden, crushing clarity that their arrogant little game had completely blown up in their faces. Their entire world of social status, local immunity, and petty domestic tyranny was dissolving into ash in real time.
Stone carried Lily out toward the front entryway just as three local police officers, accompanied by two state troopers and a social worker, rushed up the shattered front steps with their badges displayed.
“Federal and military operational extraction in progress,” Stone announced calmly, flashing his secure Department of Defense credential to the lead police captain. “The child is secured and physically removed from abusive custody. The four adult female suspects inside are detained pending federal and state child endangerment charges. Secure the perimeter.”
The police captain took one look at the military credentials, the shattered front door, and the sobbing child wrapped in a combat veteran's arms, and immediately nodded in professional understanding. “Understood, Sergeant. We’ll take it from here.”
As Lily was gently handed over to the licensed social worker and emergency medical technicians waiting in an ambulance parked in the driveway, Stone pulled out his satellite phone and dialed a direct, encrypted extension.
“Colonel,” Stone reported crisply. “Daughter is secured, medically evaluated, and currently in protective custody with state workers. Perimeter is locked down. Local authorities are assisting with the detention of the suspects. Your house is fully under our control.”

Over the secure line, thirty thousand feet in the air and descending fast toward the military airfield, Elias Reed let out a long, slow breath that carried the accumulated weight of a hundred battles.
“Good work, Stone,” Elias said, his voice cold as steel. “Hold the line. I’m touching down in twenty minutes.”
