Chapter 4 - The General’s Wrath

The twin-engine military transport jet touched down on the tarmac of the Fairfield regional military airstrip with a sharp screech of rubber against concrete, taxiing rapidly toward a secured hangar bay. Before the engines had even fully wound down, the side cabin door swung open, and Colonel Elias Reed descended the metal stairs in full dress uniform, his chest adorned with rows of combat ribbons, expert badges, and the unmistakable insignia of a senior special operations commander.
A military police vehicle was waiting at the base of the stairs. Elias climbed into the back seat without a word, and the driver immediately accelerated toward his suburban residence with lights flashing.
When the vehicle pulled up to his house, the scene resembled a crime scene investigation. Police cruisers blocked both ends of the street. Yellow caution tape fluttered in the evening breeze across the shattered front porch. Neighbors stood on their front lawns whispering among themselves, watching in stunned silence as two police officers led Marlene Walker out of the front door in handcuffs.
Marlene’s hair was disheveled, her expensive blouse wrinkled, and her face flushed with furious humiliation. When she saw Elias stepping out of the military police vehicle, her eyes bulged with venom.
“Elias! You ungrateful bastard!” Marlene shrieked, struggling against the cuffs as the officers guided her toward a patrol car. “How dare you call these thugs on your own family! Claire is your wife! We were just teaching the girl some discipline!”
Elias didn't even break his stride. He didn't yell, he didn't curse, and he didn't dignify her pathetic screeching with a single word of response. He simply looked at her with the cold, dead-eyed stare of a commanding officer observing a defeated enemy combatant before walking past her into the house.
Inside, the living room was a disaster area. Shards of broken crystal wine glasses littered the floor. The front door was splintered into kindling. Claire and her three sisters sat handcuffed in a row on the remaining sofa, flanked by two armed military police guards and a federal investigator.
When Claire saw Elias walk through the threshold, wearing his full combat dress uniform with the rank of Colonel gleaming on his shoulders, the arrogant defiance in her eyes instantly collapsed into sheer, panicked terror. She had spent years treating him like an absent-minded provider who could be manipulated, cheated, and undermined behind his back while she ruled the household with her mother and sisters. She had completely forgotten what kind of man he actually was.
“E-Elias…” Claire stammered, her voice trembling pathetically as she forced a sickly sweet, desperate smile. “Oh, thank goodness you’re home. You have to help us—these crazy men broke into the house, they smashed the door, they terrorized Mom and my sisters! It was all just a misunderstanding, a silly family joke that got a little out of hand—”
Elias stopped dead in his tracks about six feet away from her. He looked down at the woman he had married, seeing past the makeup, the designer clothes, and the fake tears straight into the rotten, cruel core of her character.
“A joke?” Elias asked, his voice deathly quiet, carrying a dangerous, suppressed resonance that made even the armed military police officers take a subtle step back.
“Y-yes! Just a family disagreement!” Claire babbled frantically, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. “You know how my mother gets, she gets stressed, and the girls were just—we didn't mean any real harm to Lily, I swear to God—”
“I watched the live security feed from thirty thousand feet, Claire,” Elias interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, slicing through the room like a razor blade. “I watched my mother-in-law drag my daughter across concrete. I watched you stand there smiling, filming it like entertainment on your phone. I watched your sisters pour flammable liquid on my terrified eight-year-old child and threaten to set her on fire.”
Claire’s mouth opened and closed silently, like a fish out of water. The color drained completely from her face.
“You didn't just break my trust,” Elias continued, his tone unwavering, cold, and absolute. “You crossed a line that can never, ever be uncrossed. As of two hours ago, my military attorneys filed an expedited petition for sole legal and physical custody of Lily, accompanied by federal child endangerment charges, conspiracy, and domestic terrorism enhancement warrants signed by a federal magistrate.”
“Elias, please!” Claire screamed, bursting into uncontrollable weeping as she lunged forward, though the handcuffs held her fast. “You can’t divorce me! You can’t take my daughter away! We’re a family!”

“We were never a family,” Elias replied softly, turning his back on her. He signaled to the federal investigator and the military police guards. “Take them away. Process every single one of them through the federal magistrate in Bridgeport. I want zero bail, maximum sentencing, and restraining orders that permanently ban them from coming within five hundred miles of my daughter or myself for the rest of their natural lives.”
As Claire and her sisters were hauled out of the house in handcuffs, wailing and screaming protests into the evening air, Elias stood alone in the center of the devastated living room. The nightmare was over. Now, it was time to heal his little girl.
