Chapter 3 - The Four Men in Black Suits

Before my father could formulate a response to my words, the massive, mahogany-and-glass double doors at the rear of the ballroom burst open with a resounding bang.

The heavy oak portals hit the interior walls hard enough to make the crystal chandeliers sway. Every head in the room whipped around toward the entrance, expecting late-arriving guests or perhaps the hotel manager with an apology.

Instead, four imposing men stepped into the hall.

They moved with the synchronized, terrifying precision of military operatives. Each man stood well over six feet tall, clad in bespoke Italian black suits, dark sunglasses despite the indoor lighting, and earpieces connected to encrypted comms. They didn't look like wedding guests; they looked like a tactical extraction squad.

The ballroom music didn't return. The murmurs died instantly, replaced by a dense, suffocating hush.

The four men marched down the central aisle, ignoring the stunned stares of Boston’s elite. They split into two pairs, flanking the perimeters of the room, before stopping precisely at the edge of the head table where my family sat frozen in shock.

Robert dropped the microphone. It hit the floor with a sharp, screeching feedback squeal that made several guests wince.

"What—what is the meaning of this?" my father stammered, his face turning from flushed red to an ashen, sickly gray. He puffed out his chest, trying to regain a shred of his corporate authority. "Do you know who I am? I am Robert Sterling, CEO of Sterling Development Group! Security! Get these thugs out of here right now!"

None of the hotel security guards moved. In fact, the head hotel manager was standing near the back service entrance, looking pale and sweating profusely, refusing to make eye contact with anyone.

The lead man in the black suit—a scarred, towering giant with cold gray eyes—ignored my father entirely. He walked straight past the head table, bypassing Chloe and my mother, and came to a dead halt right in front of me.

To the absolute horror of the three hundred guests, the fierce, intimidating man bowed deeply at the waist, folding his hands neatly in front of him.

"Good evening, Mrs. Vance," the man spoke in a deep, gravelly baritone that carried clearly across the silent room. "The perimeter is secure. All assets belonging to the Sterling family have been officially frozen under Federal Court Order 88-B, effective forty seconds ago."

A collective gasp sucked the air right out of the room.

Mrs. Vance?

My mother clutched her chest, her eyes darting between the towering bodyguard and me. "What... what did he call you? Meredith, what is the meaning of this sick joke? Who are these men?!"

I slowly wiped a stray drop of red wine from my wrist with a pristine white napkin, never breaking eye contact with my trembling father.

"You asked how I could afford this dress, Tiffany," I said, my voice echoing smoothly across the hall. "The truth is, I didn't pay for it. My husband did. And unlike Robert, my husband doesn't need to embezzle pension funds or bankrupt local contractors to buy a suit."

Chloe’s face turned the color of curdled milk. "Husband? Meredith, you don't have a husband! You’re a lonely spinster! You live in a cramped studio apartment!"

"A studio apartment?" I let out a low, humorless chuckle. "Chloe, sweetie, that 'studio apartment' was just a pied-à-terre I used when I wanted to escape the noise of our Fifth Avenue penthouse in Manhattan. But I suppose a girl who measures wealth by the size of a suburban Boston lawn wouldn't understand the difference."

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors swung open once more.

A single figure stepped through the threshold, silhouetted by the hallway lights. And the entire room collectively stopped breathing.
