Chapter 1 - The Real Owner Steps Out of the Shadows

The silence inside the sprawling lake villa suddenly felt heavier than the storm raging outside. Luca’s hand froze halfway across the leather folder. His eyes, usually so calculating and sharp in corporate boardrooms, flickered with a sudden, uncharacteristic panic.
“What are you talking about, Jessi?” Luca demanded, his voice pitching slightly upward—a telltale sign that his polished veneer was cracking. “The entity holding the title is VCD Holdings. I am the sole managing director.”
“You were,” I corrected softly, stepping back from the dining table and crossing my arms.
Before Luca could formulate a reply, the heavy double doors leading to the indoor terrace clicked open. Footsteps echoed across the polished oak flooring—heavy, deliberate, and entirely unexpected.
Chloe gasped, spinning around. “Who is that? Luca, you said nobody else was supposed to be here!”
From the shadow of the arched hallway stepped Marcus Vance.
Not my husband. Not my betrayer.
Marcus Vance—Luca’s older brother, a brilliant financial attorney who had spent the last five years quietly buying up distressed commercial debt across the entire Eastern seaboard, including every single note attached to Vance Capital Development.
And walking right behind Marcus was a striking, impeccably dressed woman with cold, unforgiving eyes: Victoria Ruiz.
Chloe froze, her jaw dropping so fast I thought it might hit the limestone floor. Color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking ghostly under the designer chandelier.
“V-Victoria?” Chloe stammered, clutching the edge of the dining table for support. “What... what are you doing here? You’re supposed to be in Geneva!”
Victoria smiled, though there was zero warmth in her expression. It was the smile of a predator who had just watched a rabbit walk directly into a snare. “Hello, Chloe. It turns out my husband keeps very detailed financial records. And unlike you, I don't leave my corporate credit card statements lying around on hotel nightstands.”
Luca’s face went from pale to an alarming shade of bruised purple. He turned on his brother, his fists clenching at his sides. “Marcus? What the hell is this? You’re trespassing! This is a corporate asset!”
Marcus didn't even blink. He pulled a thick manila folder from his leather briefcase, pulled out a single certified document, and dropped it right on top of Luca’s fraudulent divorce papers.
“It was a corporate asset, little brother,” Marcus said, his voice ice-cold. “Until three weeks ago, when your company defaulted on its primary bridge loan. Who do you think bought the debt, Luca? Who do you think holds the primary mortgage on this four-million-dollar lake villa, as well as the headquarters downtown?”
Luca stared down at the paper. His eyes scanned the signature block at the bottom, where a notary public had officially transferred the title over to a private trust.
My trust.

“No,” Luca breathed, shaking his head frantically. “No, that’s impossible. I signed the restructuring papers last month! The board approved—!”
“The board didn't approve anything, Luca, because I am the majority shareholder of VCD Holdings,” Marcus interrupted, stepping closer. “Jessi gave you the rope. You just tied the knot around your own neck.”
