Chapter 2 - The Audit That Exposed It All

The rain lashed violently against the two-story glass windows of the living room, but inside, the temperature felt absolute zero.

Luca tried to recover his composure, adjusting his cashmere coat with trembling fingers. He forced a strained, arrogant laugh—the exact laugh he used whenever an investor caught him in a lie during quarterly earnings calls.

“This is a ridiculous stunt,” Luca spat out, glaring at me. “Jessi, call off your little theater troupe. Marcus, you’re violating a family trust. I’ll have you disbarred by morning!”

“You won’t have anything by morning, Luca,” Victoria said, stepping forward until she stood just inches away from Chloe. The air between the two women crackled with palpable tension.

Victoria didn't raise her voice. She didn't have to. “Chloe, darling, did Luca happen to mention where he got the funds for your new Mercedes? Or that twenty-eight-thousand-dollar diamond tennis bracelet on your wrist?”

Chloe instinctively pulled her sleeve down over her wrist, her eyes darting toward the front door as if calculating her chances of sprinting out into the freezing rain. “That’s none of your business, Victoria. We’re separated!”

“Not legally, we aren't,” Victoria snapped back sharply. “And embezzling corporate funds from Vance Capital Development to finance an affair—using company accounts disguised as ‘client hospitality’—isn't just grounds for a messy divorce. It’s a federal wire fraud felony.”

Luca stepped in front of Chloe, puffing out his chest the way he always did when he wanted to intimidate someone. “Don’t you dare talk to her like that. Jessi is the one behind this! She’s bitter because the marriage is over!”

I walked slowly toward the kitchen counter, picked up my tablet, and tapped the screen. Instantly, the large smart-home television mounted above the stone fireplace flickered to life.

It didn't show a movie. It showed a meticulously organized digital spreadsheet, complete with highlighted bank transfers, shell company names, and high-resolution scanned copies of forged expense reports.

“For fourteen years, Luca, I managed every financial oversight, every tax filing, and every corporate audit for your company,” I said, my voice echoing clearly in the quiet room. “When you started siphoning funds to pay for Chloe’s luxury apartment in downtown Charlotte six months ago, you forgot one very important detail.”

Luca stared up at the screen, his face draining of all remaining color.

“You forgot that I set up the accounting software,” I continued, walking back toward the center of the room. “Every single fraudulent transfer you made, every fake invoice you submitted to cover your tracks, and every offshore account you set up was automatically flagged and mirrored onto an encrypted server that only Marcus and I had access to.”

Marcus crossed his arms, looking at his younger brother with profound disappointment. “You thought you were the smartest guy in every room, Luca. But while you were busy playing the visionary playboy, Jessi was quietly securing every single asset you thought you owned.”

Chloe looked at Luca in sheer terror. The glamorous, carefree life she thought she was stepping into was evaporating before her eyes. “Luca... what is he talking about? You said the company was worth millions! You said we were untouchable!”

“Shut up, Chloe,” Luca hissed, his voice cracking under the mounting pressure.

“Oh, she shouldn't shut up, brother,” Marcus said smoothly, pulling out another document. “Because according to the forensic audit completed yesterday, Vance Capital Development is currently sitting on four point two million dollars in unpaid liabilities, tax liens, and fraudulent loans. The company is bankrupt.”
