Chapter 4 - The Takeover Complete

By 2:00 PM that afternoon, the news had officially broken across Bloomberg, CNBC, and the front page of The Wall Street Journal.
WHITMORE DYNAMICS RESTRUCTURED: FOUNDER’S DAUGHTER NORA WHITMORE TAKES SOLE CONTROL; CEO JULIAN WHITMORE OUSTED AMID EMBEZZLEMENT PROBE.
Down in the ground-floor lobby of the corporate headquarters, federal agents had already arrived with a warrant to secure the executive suites, seize financial records, and escort Gwen off the premises. Cameras flashed outside the glass doors as reporters scrambled to capture footage of the dramatic corporate implosion.
Inside my newly appointed corner office—the grand executive suite that Julian had spent the morning desperately trying to pack his personal belongings out of—the atmosphere was peaceful and triumphant.
Marcus stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the Seattle skyline with a satisfied smirk. “Well, Nora. I must admit, I always knew you were the brains behind Whitmore Dynamics, but watching you execute that corporate decapitation was a masterclass in strategic warfare.”
I sat behind the massive walnut desk—the exact desk my father had sat behind when he founded the company thirty years ago—and signed the final transfer papers.
“My father taught me one very important rule in business, Marcus,” I said, looking up with a faint smile. “Never underestimate someone who chooses silence over conflict. While Julian was busy shouting from the rooftops about his vision, I was quietly securing the foundation.”
The office door opened without a knock.
Julian stood in the doorway, looking utterly defeated. Two security guards stood on either side of him, holding cardboard boxes filled with his personal desk trinkets, framed photos of himself speaking at conferences, and his expensive Montblanc pens.
He didn't look at Marcus. He looked only at me.
“They’re freezing my personal bank accounts, Nora,” Julian said, his voice hollow and desperate. “My credit cards are declined. My lawyers are refusing to take my calls unless I pay a fifty-thousand-dollar retainer upfront. Gwen packed her bags and blocked my number the second the federal agents walked into her office. I have... I have nothing left.”
I leaned back in my executive leather chair, folding my hands neatly on top of the desk.
“You have your freedom, Julian,” I replied evenly. “And you have a very thorough federal investigation to keep you company.”
Julian swallowed hard, tears finally welling in his eyes. “Is there... is there any way back? Any settlement? Any deal we can make?”
May you like
“The only deal you’re going to get is whatever your court-appointed public defender manages to negotiate with the federal prosecutor,” I said firmly. “Security, escort Mr. Whitmore out of the building.”
The two guards stepped forward, firmly gripping Julian by the arms and turning him around. Without another word, Julian was led out of the office, his head bowed in absolute disgrace, exiting the empire he had tried to steal with nothing more than a cardboard box of personal debris.
