Chapter 3 - The Ghost Train and the Gathering Storm

The northern pass was a jagged scar of black rock and swirling snow, cutting through the spine of the frost-bitten mountains that separated Iron Hold from the vast, untamed territories of the Winterborn clan.
Wrapped in a heavy, fur-lined travel cloak of dark charcoal wool, Genevieve urged her massive black stallion forward through the blinding blizzard. Beside her rode Beatrice, her face buried deep in her scarf, her breath pluming into white clouds of frozen air in the sub-zero darkness.
They had been riding hard for twelve solid hours without a single pause for rest.
Genevieve’s left palm, wrapped tightly in a clean strip of linen, throbbed with a dull, persistent ache where she had slashed it to seal the divorce decree. Yet, that physical pain was nothing compared to the roaring furnace of power burning deep within her chest.
For ten long years, her wolf had been suppressed, forced into quiet submission by a family that viewed her only as a bargaining chip. But the moment she penned that letter in her own blood and severed the false mating bond with Gideon, something ancient and wild had snapped open inside her soul.
The true bloodline of the Winterborn Alpha ancestors—warriors who had fought side-by-side with dire wolves and commanded the northern tempests—woke up.
Her senses were preternaturally sharp. Through the howling gale and the blinding curtain of snow, she could hear the distant snapping of pine branches miles behind them. She could smell the scent of pursuit carried on the frozen wind: iron, sweat, and the unmistakable musk of Iron Hold tracker wolves.
"My Lady!" Beatrice shouted over the roar of the blizzard, her voice cracking with exhaustion. "The horses... they can't go much further! The snow is too deep, and the pass ahead is blocked by the old avalanche!"
Genevieve pulled her horse to a sudden, sliding halt at the edge of a jagged precipice. She threw back her hood, letting her silver-braided hair whip wildly in the freezing wind, and stared down into the abyss.
Below them, half-buried in snow and ice, lay the forgotten tracks of the old mountain railway—an iron lifeline abandoned decades ago during the great northern wars. And sitting quietly on the tracks, shrouded in steam and magical warding runes, was an archaic, heavily armored steam locomotive known throughout the northern myths as the Iron Ghost.
It wasn't meant to exist. Pack elders whispered that the train only appeared to those carrying royal blood in desperate need of an escape from tyranny.
"They're closing in, Beatrice," Genevieve said, her dark eyes flashing with a dangerous, luminescent gold light in the dark.
True to her words, a chorus of spine-chilling howls echoed from the cliffs behind them. Three massive, silver-furred dire wolves leaped out from the blinding snowstorm, landing with heavy thuds on the ridge just fifty yards away. At their front stood Captain Reginald, transformed halfway into his wolf form, his eyes blazing with reluctant fury.
"Queen Genevieve!" Reginald’s voice boomed magically across the frozen canyon. "By order of the Alpha King, you are commanded to halt and return to Iron Hold immediately! Do not force us to use force!"
Genevieve didn't flinch. She looked down at the ancient steam engine below, then back at the advancing wolves.

"Tell your Alpha King," Genevieve called out, her voice carrying effortlessly over the howling wind with unnatural, terrifying resonance, "that the queen he abandoned is dead. The Luna of Winterborn has risen. And if he ever crosses my path again, I will strip his crown and feed his bones to the snow-hawks!"
With a sharp kick to her stallion's flanks, Genevieve leaped off the snowy precipice, plunging straight down toward the tracks below, vanishing into the billowing steam of the ghost train as the heavy steel doors slid open to swallow them whole.
