Chapter 3 - The Scramble for Survival

By sunrise, the financial markets had opened, and the shockwaves of the Vale Meridian boardroom coup hit Wall Street like a seismic tremor.
By 9:00 AM, trading of Vale Meridian stock was temporarily halted after an initial twenty-two percent plummet, triggered by emergency filings from our general counsel detailing the CEO’s immediate suspension and the forensic audit into executive fund embezzlement. Financial news networks ran breaking banner headlines across every major channel: VALE MERIDIAN GROUP SUSPENDS CEO AMID FRAUD PROBE; ASHCROFT TRUST REVOKES ASSET LICENSING.
I sat in my private study at the Ashcroft estate, a cup of Earl Grey tea steaming on the mahogany desk, watching the live financial coverage on mute while reviewing the restructuring proposals submitted by our legal team. The phone on my desk rang continuously—calls from panicked institutional investors, skittish venture capitalists, and board members scrambling to pledge their loyalty to the new interim leadership structure. I let every single call go to voicemail. Let them sweat. For years, they had turned a blind eye to Adrian’s arrogance, treating his misogyny as harmless eccentricities of a high-performing executive. Now, they were learning the cost of backing a fraud.
Around 11:30 AM, the heavy oak doors of my study pushed open without permission.
Celeste Vale marched into the room, her immaculate Chanel suit looking slightly rumpled, her face flushed with unmitigated fury. Behind her stood Marcus, looking pale and thoroughly defeated, his corporate Range Rover already impounded and towed from his apartment building earlier that morning.
"Have you completely lost your mind, Eleanor?" Celeste shrieked, slamming her designer handbag down onto my reading table. "Do you have any idea what you've done to this family? You’ve ruined Adrian! You’ve frozen our accounts, our cards, our home security credentials! The country club just suspended our memberships because our annual dues were billed through the corporate account! Call your lawyers right now and reverse this insanity!"
I didn't look up from my tablet. I slowly turned a digital page of the asset recovery manifest.
"You're standing in my house, Celeste," I said calmly, my voice dangerously low. "Using a name you only wear because my family allowed your son into our social circle. Let’s talk about your home—the four-million-dollar estate in the gated hills. Did you know the mortgage is held entirely by Ashcroft Real Estate Holdings? And that your residency agreement was contingent upon Adrian maintaining good standing as CEO?"
Celeste’s breath caught in her throat. "You... you can't evict us. We’re family!"
"You were parasites living off dividends you never earned," I replied, finally lifting my gaze to meet hers. "For twelve years, I listened to you make snide remarks at every family dinner—mocking my quietness, hinting that I was barren, worthless, and lucky to be kept by a titan like Adrian. You laughed when he belittled me in public. You applauded his cruelty. Well, the lease on your dignity has expired, Celeste. Eviction notices for your estate were served by courier twenty minutes ago. You have forty-eight hours to pack your designer bags."
Marcus stepped forward, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and panic. "Eleanor, come on. Be reasonable. We’re brothers—well, former in-laws. Surely we can work out a settlement. Adrian is willing to sign a quiet divorce decree, give you a respectable alimony settlement, if you just reinstate the corporate credit lines and drop the audit—"
"A settlement?" I stood up from my desk, smoothing my skirt, towering over Marcus with an authority that made him instinctively take a step backward. "Marcus, your brother is facing federal wire fraud and corporate embezzlement charges. The forensic audit has already traced over eight hundred thousand dollars of company funds diverted into your personal offshore cryptocurrency wallets to cover your gambling debts. Do you really think I’m interested in negotiating a settlement?"

Marcus’s face turned the color of ash. He looked at his mother, panic setting in. "How... how did you know about the crypto wallet?"
"My father taught me long before he passed away: never trust a man who spends other people's money with a smile," I said coldly. "Now, get out of my house before I have security throw both of you off the property."
