Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of the Alliance

By Thursday afternoon, the grand alliance between Adrian Vale and Vanessa Cole had disintegrated into a toxic theater of mutual finger-pointing and legal desperation.
With federal investigators reviewing the corporate embezzlement files and the board of directors refusing to take Adrian’s calls, the high-flying corporate power couple discovered that loyalty built on greed dissolves the moment the bank accounts freeze.
According to reports from our corporate security liaison, Adrian and Vanessa had holed up in a luxury boutique hotel downtown—the only place whose reservation system hadn't yet flagged their compromised credit cards—only to descend into a screaming match that resulted in hotel security being called to break up a physical altercation in the lobby.
My phone buzzed on my desk while I was reviewing architectural blueprints for the upcoming Ashcroft Community Foundation Center. It was an incoming call from an unlisted, burner-style mobile number.
I swiped to answer and pressed the phone to my ear.
"Eleanor."
Adrian’s voice sounded hollow, cracked, and completely stripped of its former swagger. Gone was the charismatic CEO who had raised a glass of champagne to humiliate me in front of four hundred people. What remained was a desperate, broken man drowning in the wreckage of his own hubris.
"Adrian," I replied evenly. "How is the hotel Wi-Fi? Are your credit cards still working, or are you having to pay cash for room service?"
A heavy sigh echoed through the speaker. "Please... Eleanor, we need to talk. Off the record. Just you and me. I know I messed up. I was arrogant, I was blind, I let ambition and... and distractions cloud my judgment. But twelve years of marriage has to count for something, right? We built a life together."
"You built a life of lies, Adrian," I corrected him sharply. "I funded your career while you entertained mistresses and plotted my public humiliation. You didn't want a wife; you wanted a silent shareholder who would smile in the background while you played emperor."
"Vanessa lied to me!" Adrian suddenly blurted out, his voice pitching upward in desperate self-preservation. "She manipulated me! She convinced me that you were holding my career back, that the board respected me more, that I deserved to be the sole master of Vale Meridian! She pushed me to make that speech at the banquet—she said it would be the ultimate power move to establish our new life!"
I couldn't help a cold, humorless smile. "And there it is. The classic Adrian Vale defense: whenever your own malice blows up in your face, you instantly throw your accomplices under the bus."
"Just help me, Eleanor," he begged, his voice breaking into a pathetic whine. "If you withdraw the criminal referral and restore my voting shares, I’ll sign over everything else. I’ll walk away with nothing. I’ll leave the state. Just don't let them send me to federal prison."
"Prison isn't my decision, Adrian," I said quietly. "That’s up to the federal prosecutors and the SEC investigators who are currently reviewing the financial ledgers. Every dollar you embezzled, every shell company you set up, every fraudulent asset transfer—it’s all a matter of public record now. The board has already voted to strip you of your pension, your stock options, and your title. Vale Meridian Group is moving forward under new, independent leadership."
"You're destroying me," he whispered, pure venom bleeding back into his tone. "You're heartless. You're a vindictive, cold-hearted monster."
May you like
"No, Adrian," I said, my voice steady and resolute. "I am simply the bill coming due."
I tapped the red end-call button, blocking his number permanently before sliding the phone across the desk.
