Chapter 3 - The Web Unravels

Gasps echoed through the gallery. My mother spun around in her seat, staring horror-struck at her son-in-law. "Jamal? What is the judge talking about? Tell him it’s a lie!"

Jamal couldn't speak. His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, his polished teeth no longer gleaming, his face chalk-white. The golden boy of the family, the successful investment broker who had looked down his nose at my "low-level technical support" job, was suddenly staring down the barrel of a multi-count federal indictment.

Evelyn stood up, buttoning her jacket with quiet satisfaction. "If it please the court, my client, Cassidy Vale, is not a low-level technical support worker. For the past six years, Cassidy has been a senior cybersecurity engineer and forensic data analyst for the federal government's financial crimes task force. She was the primary internal whistleblower who flagged Northern Lake Capital’s illegal offshore margin manipulation three months ago."

The room spun for my family. Patricia clutched her chest, letting out a genuine, terror-stricken gasp. Richard stood frozen, his mouth hanging open, looking between me and his prized son-in-law as the terrifying reality crashed down upon them.

"For months," Evelyn continued, her voice echoing off the courtroom walls, "Mr. Price realized his firm was being audited by my client’s division. In a desperate attempt to discredit her, intimidate her, and seize her unencumbered real estate assets to cover his impending margin trading losses, he conspired with his family to manufacture a fake mental incompetency claim. They stole her mail, cloned her dormant bank accounts, and forged financial default notices, hoping to lock her away in a conservatorship before federal indictments could be unsealed."

Judge Whitman turned his piercing gaze back to Mr. Caldwell, who was now frantically gathering his papers, desperately trying to distance himself from his own clients. "Mr. Caldwell, do you wish to withdraw your petition for conservatorship?"

"Your Honor... in light of... unexpected developments, petitioners move to dismiss without prejudice," Caldwell stammered, his face soaked in cold sweat.

"Denied," Judge Whitman barked. "This petition is dismissed with prejudice. Furthermore, based on the evidence of perjury, subornation of perjury, wire fraud, and identity theft contained within this SEC folder, I am issuing an immediate bench warrant for the arrest of Jamal Price. Bailiffs, take him into custody."
