Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Vindication

An hour later, the courtroom had emptied of spectators, leaving only Judge Whitman, Evelyn, and me. The judge had dismissed the remaining technicalities in chambers, formally restoring all my rights, issuing permanent protective orders against my parents and sister, and officially transferring the federal investigation files directly to the U.S. Attorney's office for immediate prosecution of Jamal and any co-conspirators.

As I walked out of the federal courthouse into the bright Chicago sunshine, the crisp autumn wind whipped off the lake, carrying the familiar, revitalizing scent of the city I loved. My paid-off downtown condo overlooking the Chicago River was safe. My career as a top-tier federal cybersecurity engineer was secure, burnished by the successful prosecution of one of the city's most corrupt financial rings.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text message from an unknown number—my mother.

Please, Cassidy. Call us. Your father is sick, Brittany is having contractions from the stress, we have nowhere to turn. We’re your family.

I stopped on the stone steps of the courthouse, staring at the screen for a long, quiet moment. I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel sadness. I felt only a profound, liberating emptiness where the need for their approval used to live.

I tapped the screen, blocked the number, and slid the phone back into my pocket.

Behind me, Evelyn walked out, buttoning her coat against the wind and offering a rare, approving smile. "Need a ride back to your luxury condo, Ms. Vale?"
