Chapter 2 - Into the Lion’s Den

The sedan exited the highway and plunged into a quieter, heavily guarded sector of the city near the waterfront. Massive wrought-iron gates swung open automatically as Roman’s car approached, revealing a secluded, ultra-modern glass and steel estate perched directly over the churning harbor waters. This wasn't just a house; it was an impregnable fortress.

“Where are we?” I asked, clutching the torn fabric of my gray office skirt over my bleeding foot as the car glided to a smooth halt inside a subterranean garage.

“My home,” Roman replied, cutting the engine. The sudden silence in the car felt absolute. “It’s the only place in Boston where Russo’s men won't dare to step foot.”

He got out of the car, walked around to the rear door, and pulled it open before I could shrink away. The harsh overhead lights of the garage cast sharp shadows across his face, highlighting the pale scar slashing his left eyebrow. He extended a large, steady hand toward me. I looked at his palm—strong, unyielding, scarred by a life I couldn't possibly fathom—and then up into his calm, dark eyes.

“I can walk,” I muttered stubbornly, pulling my legs back.

“You’re missing the skin off your heel, your stocking is shredded, and you’re shaking so hard your teeth are chattering,” Roman said evenly, his tone leaving no room for debate. “Take my hand, Chloe.”

Pride warred with sheer exhaustion, and exhaustion won. I placed my trembling hand in his. His grip was warm, firm, and surprisingly gentle as he helped me slide out of the vehicle and onto the polished concrete floor. When my right foot touched the ground, a sharp gasp escaped my lips, and my knees buckled.

Before I hit the floor, Roman’s arm swept around my waist, lifting me effortlessly off my feet.

“Hey—put me down!” I protested, mortified as he carried me toward a private elevator tucked into the corner of the garage.

“Be quiet and save your energy,” he murmured against the top of my head, his voice a low vibration that sent an unbidden shiver down my spine.

The elevator ride was swift, rising straight up into the penthouse level of the structure. When the doors slid open, I found myself standing in a breathtaking space of minimalist luxury. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls looked out over the stormy, dark expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, while warm recessed lighting highlighted sleek leather furniture, polished concrete floors, and towering bookshelves. It was a sanctuary of absolute power and quiet elegance.

Roman carried me straight to a plush white sofa in the center of the room and set me down gently. He disappeared down a hallway for a moment, returning with a medical kit, a soft white towel, and a pair of plush woolen slippers. Without a word of hesitation, he knelt on the floor in front of me, lifting my injured foot onto his knee with infinite care.

“This is going to sting,” he warned, opening a bottle of antiseptic.

“I’ve survived worse,” I whispered, gritting my teeth as he began to clean the raw, bleeding skin on my heel.

“I don't doubt that,” Roman replied softly, his eyes focused entirely on his task. “Living with a volatile thug like Tommy for three years takes a specific kind of endurance. Why didn't you leave sooner?”

The question hung heavily in the air, sharp and uncomfortably intimate. I looked away, staring out at the violent waves crashing against the rocks far below. “Because I was afraid. Because he isolated me from my friends, drained my savings, and convinced me that I had nowhere else to go. When you’re trapped in a cage long enough, you forget how to push the door open.”

Roman finished swabbing the wound and gently wrapped my foot in clean gauze, his movements remarkably tender for a man who commanded a criminal empire. He looked up, his dark gaze locking onto mine. “You pushed it open tonight, Chloe. That takes courage most men twice your size don't possess.”

A sudden warmth bloomed in my chest, completely disconnected from the fear that had consumed me all evening. But before I could process the strange, magnetic pull drawing me toward him, the heavy oak front door of the penthouse shuddered under the force of a violent, frantic pounding.
