Chapter 4 - The Tables Turn

Frank Russo’s face flushed a deep, mottled purple, stepping forward with his hand reaching instinctively toward the concealed holster beneath his suit jacket. “Let him go, Vale! You might own the docks, but you don't cross me in my own city! My men outnumber you, and—'
Before Russo could finish his sentence, the side doors of the penthouse slid open with a soft hiss.
From the shadows emerged half a dozen heavily armed tactical guards, dressed in black combat gear and carrying automatic rifles aimed squarely at Russo and his men. At the same time, the private elevator chimed, and two more armed operatives stepped out, blocking the only exit.
Russo froze, his hand hovering over his holster. The arrogant sneer vanished from his face, replaced by a sudden, sickening realization. He had walked straight into a prepared trap.
“Your men?” Roman asked coldly, loosening his grip on Tommy just enough to let the whimpering man slide down the pillar into a pathetic heap on the floor. Roman turned slowly to face Russo, his dark eyes burning with absolute authority. “Frank, you seem to forget whose harbor you’re operating in. Every dock, every warehouse, every shipping container, and every rat scurrying through your payroll belongs to me. I let you play your little games because you were useful. But leaking federal manifests and threatening innocent people inside my city? That was a mistake.”
Russo swallowed hard, his bravado completely evaporating. “Roman... wait. We can talk about this. We’re partners—”
“We were never partners,” Roman interrupted flatly. He glanced over his shoulder at me. “Chloe, bring me the paper.”
My heart hammered against my ribs, but the paralyzing fear was entirely gone, replaced by a fierce, liberating strength. I reached down, picked up the damp, crumpled blue carbon sheet from the coffee table where I had dropped it, and walked across the room. I handed it directly to Roman.
Roman took it without looking away from Russo. He unfolded the blue paper, scanning the handwritten columns of numbers, container codes, and Tommy’s careless block print at the bottom: F.R. — EAST DOCK / V FREIGHT / NORTHSTAR — 11/18.
“This little sheet of paper,” Roman said, holding it up between two fingers like a death warrant, “contains the exact routing numbers for your illegal offshore accounts, Frank. My financial forensic team decrypted your shell companies three hours ago. All I needed was the physical chain-of-custody receipt from your drop point to tie you directly to federal wire fraud and international arms trafficking.”
Russo’s knees buckled slightly. He looked at Tommy sprawled on the floor, then back at Roman, realizing his entire criminal empire had just collapsed around him.
“Take them out,” Roman commanded quietly.
Russo’s guards didn't even reach for their weapons. They raised their hands instantly as Roman’s tactical team moved in, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Russo’s wrists and hauling him away toward the service elevator. Two other guards grabbed a weeping, hysterical Tommy by the arms, dragging him backward across the polished floor while he screamed my name in desperate, pathetic pleas for mercy.

“Chloe! Please! Don’t let them take me! Chloe, we’re family!”
I watched without an ounce of pity as the elevator doors closed, sealing away the nightmare of my past forever.
