Chapter 1 - The Trap Laid by Blood

The scent of jasmine always preceded Serena. To Gabriel Mercer, it had once been the smell of a shared childhood—of bruised knees, whispered secrets in the dark corners of their grandfather’s sprawling Sicilian-style estate, and the unbreakable bond of blood. But tonight, as the rich, heady aroma cut through the copper-heavy stench of betrayal in the estate’s private dining room, it felt toxic.

Gabriel stood at the head of the heavy black walnut table, his broad shoulders squared, his frame casting a long, intimidating shadow over the polished wood. One large hand rested casually, yet dangerously, beside a neat stack of glossy photographs thrown down by his sister like a declaration of war.

Beyond the towering mahogany doors, twelve of his top capos and enforcers waited in tense silence. They knew the storm was coming. Within forty-eight hours, two major Mercer cartel shipments had been ruthlessly ambushed, millions of dollars in untraceable cargo intercepted with surgical precision. Worse still, that very evening, one of Gabriel’s most loyal drivers had barely dragged himself out of a burning truck, riddled with bullets because someone had leaked a transport route known exclusively to Gabriel’s inner circle.

An inner circle consisting of precisely three people: Gabriel himself, his security chief Mateo, and his pregnant wife, Naomi.

And yet, every single piece of evidence on the table screamed a different name: Naomi Mercer.

Naomi stood six feet away from the table, perfectly composed despite the hurricane gathering around her, one protective hand resting gently beneath the slight, beautiful curve of her stomach. She wore the deep emerald green dress Gabriel had personally selected for her just a few days ago—the one that made her amber eyes flash with a rare, captivating warmth. Only an hour earlier, before the emergency sirens had pierced the estate's perimeter, he had pressed his lips against her bare shoulder while she stood at her vanity fastening a pearl earring, whispering promises of a safe, quiet future for their unborn child.

Now, Serena was standing across from her, painting her as a cold-blooded traitor.

"Gabriel," Serena pleaded, her voice trembling with a theatrical mix of sorrow and righteous indignation. "Look at the dates on those bank transfers. Look at them. You’ve been blind because you wanted to play house, but the cartel doesn't care about your wedding vows."

Gabriel shifted his gaze from his sister to the documents. There were high-resolution screenshots of encrypted messaging apps showing real-time Mercer shipping schedules timestamped down to the minute. There were bank routing numbers tied to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. And, most damning of all, there were paparazzi-style photographs of Naomi entering a secluded Midtown boutique hotel—the very same hotel where one of Victor Kovalenko’s most notorious financial intermediaries had been tracked the previous week.

Naomi stared at the photographs, her expression shifting from absolute shock to a cold, sharp realization.

"That account number," Naomi whispered, her voice cutting through the heavy silence of the room.

Gabriel looked up, his piercing gray eyes locking onto hers. "What about it?"

"I’ve seen it before."

"Where?" Gabriel demanded.

Before Naomi could answer, Serena cut in with a brittle, mocking laugh. "Oh, please! Of course you’ve seen it! It’s probably the account you used to line your pockets with Kovalenko's blood money while my brother was busy trusting you!"

Naomi ignored Serena completely, her gaze fixed entirely on her husband. She took a step forward, her movements deliberate and calm. Instantly, one of Gabriel’s veteran guards shifted his weight, his hand hovering dangerously close to the concealed firearm at his waist.

Gabriel raised two fingers—a subtle, universal command in the Mercer empire.

The guard froze instantly.

Naomi noticed the gesture. A flicker of deep disappointment crossed her eyes before they returned to her husband.

"I was going to show you these records tonight," Naomi said evenly, her voice steady despite the sheer weight of the accusations against her. "Someone has been quietly moving millions through shell companies connected to the community foundation I manage. I pulled the initial ledgers yesterday afternoon."

"And now that you’re caught red-handed," Serena fired back, stepping into Naomi’s line of sight, "suddenly you were just 'investigating it'? Honestly, Gabriel, do you hear how ridiculous she sounds?"

"I wasn’t talking to you, Serena."

Gabriel spoke the words quietly. Scarcely above a whisper.

Yet the entire room obeyed. The heavy air seemed to freeze. That was the raw power of the man New York’s underworld both revered and feared—a man capable of ending a violent dispute simply by lowering the timbre of his voice. Naomi had never feared that voice. Not during shootouts, not during rival turf wars, not even when enemies had placed a bounty on her head.

Until tonight.

Serena pulled out her sleek smartphone, her thumb tapping aggressively across the screen. "You don’t want to believe her? Fine. Let’s listen to the audio logs recovered from the encrypted server my cyber team hacked into this afternoon."

She hit play.

Naomi’s distinct, melodic voice filled the cold dining room, bouncing off the stone walls.

“Victor’s people need the shipping schedule before Thursday. Make sure the drop point is secure.”

A brief pause in the recording, followed by another sharp fragment of dialogue in Naomi’s exact cadence:

“Gabriel can’t know. If he finds out, everything falls apart.”

The audio cut out with a harsh digital click.

Silence descended upon the room once more, heavier and more suffocating than before. Naomi’s face went entirely pale, the color draining from her cheeks as the phantom words echoed in her ears.

Gabriel felt something inside his chest fracture, turning cold and brittle like winter ice.

"That recording is heavily edited," Naomi said, her voice dropping an octave as she fought to keep her composure. "You know my voice; you know how audio deepfakes work now. Those are pieces of completely different conversations stitched together!"

Serena shook her head pityingly. "You heard her, Gabriel. There’s no denying it. The tech team verified the acoustic signatures."

"Convenient," Naomi retorted bitterly, turning her fierce gaze fully onto her sister-in-law. "Extremely convenient that your cyber team just happened to find this smoking gun right after I started asking questions about the foundation’s missing charity funds—funds that you, Serena, have direct signature authority over."

Serena gasped, recoiling dramatically as though she had just been physically struck across the face. "Gabriel! Are you going to stand there and let her slander me? After everything I’ve sacrificed for this family?"

Gabriel moved between them instinctively.

The movement was lightning-fast, born from decades of surviving assassination attempts and turf wars. It lasted less than a single second.

And Naomi saw it.

He had automatically placed his physical body between his sister and his wife, his shoulders squared defensively—facing Naomi.

Naomi’s lips parted slightly. The breath caught in her throat.

In that fraction of a second, Gabriel understood the catastrophic mistake he had just made. He saw the flash of profound realization in her amber eyes, and a cold wave of panic washed over him.

Too late.

"Naomi, don't—" Gabriel started, reaching out a hand.

Her voice was chillingly quiet when she answered. It frightened him infinitely more than if she had screamed, thrown plates, or drawn a weapon.

"Until I know what happened, nobody leaves this estate," Gabriel declared, his jaw tightening into a hard line of command.

"No," Naomi said softly.

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed. Men in the criminal underworld rarely told Gabriel Mercer 'no' twice and lived to tell the tale. But Naomi had always challenged him. It was one of the fundamental reasons he had fallen in love with her—her unyielding spirit, her refusal to bow to his terrifying reputation.

"This isn't a request, Naomi," he said, lowering his voice into a dangerous register.

"And I am not one of your soldiers, Gabriel."

"You are carrying my child."

"I am carrying our child. There is a massive difference."

The words landed like physical blows to his chest. Gabriel clenched his fists, struggling to balance his duties as a ruthless syndicate boss with the agonizing chaos of his personal life. "Someone gave Victor a Mercer route. Millions of dollars are gone, and a good man almost burned to death tonight. If I ignore hard evidence simply because I love you, my men die. Our empire falls apart."

"And if you condemn me simply because Serena happens to share your bloodline?" Naomi countered, her chin tilting up defiantly. "What then?"

Gabriel said nothing. His silence was deafening.

Naomi looked down at the damning photographs scattered across the walnut table. Then she looked past them, locking her gaze onto the woman Gabriel had protected fiercely since childhood. Finally, her eyes returned to her husband—the man she had trusted with her heart, her safety, and her future.

"Forget the physical evidence for one single second," Naomi whispered, stepping closer until Gabriel could smell the faint, familiar trace of her jasmine perfume—the same scent he had adored hours ago. "Look at me, Gabriel. Really look at me."

He did. Her eyes were shimmering with unshed tears, but her posture remained proud and unyielding.

"Three years," Naomi continued, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed emotion. "I married you knowing precisely what your name meant in the shadows of this city. I slept beside you every single night when half of New York wanted your head on a spike. I kept secrets I never wanted to carry because they were yours to protect. I stood by you through blood, war, and silence."

She took one final step closer, her breath brushing against his chest. "After all of that... do you actually believe I would betray you?"

Gabriel wanted to scream yes, to banish the doubt from his mind. But then his eyes flickered back to the financial records. He heard the haunting, stitched audio recording replaying endlessly in his mind. He remembered the bloody aftermath of his father’s assassination years ago—a tragedy born from trusting the wrong person too deeply.

His hesitation lasted barely two seconds.

For Naomi, those two agonizing seconds felt like an eternity. They were more than enough to destroy everything they had built.

Gabriel looked away, his expression turning to stone as he addressed his terrified security chief standing near the doors. "Suspend Naomi’s digital access and estate privileges until I can personally verify every single document."

Naomi’s face completely emptied of emotion. The warmth in her eyes died instantly, replaced by a devastating, chilling void.

"Gabriel..." she murmured.

"No one touches you. No one questions you without me present in the room," Gabriel commanded, trying desperately to salvage a shred of protection.

A terrible, heartbreaking little smile touched the corners of her mouth.

"You honestly still think that’s protection?" she whispered.

Slowly, deliberately, Naomi raised her left hand. With steady, agonizing precision, she slid her heavy diamond wedding ring off her finger.

Gabriel stopped breathing. The world around him seemed to grind to a halt.

Naomi carefully placed the platinum ring right beside the fraudulent evidence on the polished walnut table.

"By tomorrow morning, Gabriel," she said softly, turning toward the double doors without a backward glance, "you won't even have to wonder whether your wife is your enemy."

May you like

Then, she walked out of the dining room.

Gabriel let her go. It would forever remain the single greatest mistake, and the deepest regret, of his entire life.
