Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Past

Stepping off the private aircraft stairs onto the sun-drenched LaGuardia tarmac felt like walking onto the set of a movie Blaire had no script for. A sleek, black armored SUV idled a few yards away, its tinted windows gleaming against the afternoon glare. Two men in dark suits and sunglasses stood near the rear door, scanning the perimeter with practiced, hawk-like precision.

As Blaire descended the metal steps with Fiona pressed against her chest, a gust of wind caught her hair, and for a fleeting second, the terrifying weight of her old life threatened to crush her chest.

Back in Chicago, David Vance was likely staring at an empty master bedroom right now, wondering where his punching bag had gone. David hadn't loved Blaire in years; he had loved what she represented—a quiet, compliant accessory who managed his social calendar, hosted corporate dinners, and never complained about his late nights at the office. When Blaire had finally discovered his months-long affair with a junior VP named Chloe, David hadn't even bothered to deny it. He had simply smiled coldly, poured himself a scotch, and told her that without his name and money, she was a nobody who wouldn't survive a week in the real world.

He had frozen their joint bank accounts within twenty minutes of her packing her bags. He had threatened to use his high-priced corporate lawyers to strip away custody of Fiona, claiming Blaire was unstable, jobless, and unfit. Running to New York wasn't just an escape; it was an act of survival.

"Watch your step here," Luca’s voice cut through her racing thoughts.

He placed a warm, steady hand on the small of her back, guiding her away from the roaring jet engines toward the waiting SUV. The security operatives—one introduced as Marcus and the other as Ray—nodded respectfully as Luca opened the door for her.

"Luggage is tagged and loaded into the second vehicle, Mr. Sterling," Marcus reported crisply, tapping his earpiece. "We have a clear corridor to the Manhattan safehouse, but we've detected some digital pings tracking your flight manifest from Chicago. Looks like an automated query routed through an independent IP address."

Luca paused, his hand resting on the top of the SUV door frame. His dark eyes hardened instantly, the gentle exhaustion melting away, replaced by the razor-sharp focus of a man who controlled empires. "Origin?"

" Residential IP in Chicago," Ray answered, checking a handheld tablet. "Name attached to the query is David Vance. Appears to be using a third-party legal data-scraping tool."

Blaire felt the blood drain entirely from her face. She stumbled backward, catching herself against the side of the car. "David... he’s already looking for me?"

Luca turned his gaze from his security team back to Blaire. The air between them suddenly felt charged, heavy with impending confrontation. "You know him?"

"He's... my husband. My ex-husband," Blaire corrected quickly, her voice trembling. "He runs corporate compliance for a major logistics firm in Chicago. He's vindictive, Luca. He told me I couldn't leave, that he would make sure I never found peace. If he knows I’m in New York—if he tracks this flight—he’ll come after Fiona."

The vulnerability in Blaire’s voice fractured the last remaining restraint in Luca’s posture. The cold billionaire facade vanished completely, replaced by a fierce, protective instinct that surprised even him. He stepped closer, boxing her in slightly against the vehicle, shielding her from the prying eyes of the distant airport workers.

"Listen to me, Blaire," Luca said, his voice low, intense, and absolute. "No one touches you, and no one touches your daughter. Not while you're under my roof."

"Your roof? Luca, I can't stay with you. I’m heading to my cousin’s tiny apartment in Queens—"

"Your cousin's apartment is the first place a corporate thug with a data-scraping tool will check if he wants to find you," Luca countered logically. "My security team already knows every public record associated with your name. Within two hours, Vance will have your cousin's address. Do you want to drag your family into this?"

Blaire bit her lower lip so hard she tasted copper. He was right. Her cousin Sarah worked a modest retail job and lived in a third-walkup apartment with paper-thin walls. If David showed up there flashing cash or threats, Sarah would crumble.

"Then what am I supposed to do?" Blaire whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes, hot and frustrated. "I have fifty dollars in my purse, a diaper bag, and a baby who needs a safe place to sleep. I am running out of options."

Luca didn't hesitate. He looked at Marcus. "Reroute the convoy. We're going to the Tribeca penthouse. Notify the legal team to put a comprehensive digital shield around Blaire Sterling's identity, effective immediately. If David Vance tries to pull any legal or digital strings, bury him in injunctions before he even reaches the state line."

"Understood, boss," Marcus nodded, sliding into the driver's seat.

Luca turned back to Blaire, his expression softening as he gently wiped a stray tear from her cheek with his thumb. "You trusted me on that plane when you had every reason not to. Now, trust me off it."
