Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

The penthouse apartment on the upper East Side was cold, sterile, and reeked of expensive gin and burnt-out adrenaline.
Camilla stood in the center of the minimalist living room, her heart hammering against her ribs, while Victor and two other associates swept the perimeter with silent efficiency. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking, panoramic view of the glittering Manhattan skyline, but Camilla couldn't appreciate it. Every shadow looked like Trent waiting in the dark with a clenched fist.
“Clear,” Victor muttered, emerging from the master bedroom with Trent’s discarded designer blazer tossed over his arm.
Matteo stepped out of the private elevator behind them, his charcoal overcoat draped over his broad shoulders. He walked over to the sleek glass-and-steel desk tucked into the corner of the room, where Trent’s personal desktop workstation sat humming quietly in sleep mode.
“He hasn’t wiped the local cache,” Matteo noted, glancing at the blinking indicator light. “He assumed we wouldn't move this fast. He thought he had until Monday morning to cover his tracks.”
Camilla stepped up beside the desk, slipping her leather handbag off her shoulder and placing it on the glass surface. She pulled a sleek, encrypted USB drive from her pocket—a tool Matteo’s team had provided during the twenty-minute car ride uptown.
“He keeps his primary master ledger on an encrypted partition,” Camilla said, her fingers flying over the mechanical keyboard with practiced speed. “If he hasn't synced the offline drive to the cloud yet, I can pull the direct transaction logs and trace the exact routing keys he used to forge my digital signature.”
She plugged the drive into the USB-C port. A command prompt window blinked into existence on the dark monitor, green text scrolling downward like a cascading digital waterfall.
Behind her, Matteo stood silently, watching her hands. The proximity of his powerful frame radiated a steady, grounding warmth that helped cut through the residual panic shaking her nerves.
“You’re exceptionally skilled for a junior analyst,” Matteo observed softly, his voice low enough not to break her concentration.
“Junior analysts do eighty percent of the heavy lifting while senior partners take seventy percent of the credit and all of the bonuses,” Camilla muttered without looking up, her eyes locked on the scrolling hexadecimal code. “I spent three years auditing offshore asset flows for Fortune 500 corporations before Trent recruited me into his division. He thought I was just a quiet girl from Queens he could mold into a quiet secretary. He made a massive mistake.”
“Men like Larson always underestimate women who refuse to make noise until the exact moment the blade drops,” Matteo replied.
Suddenly, a sharp beep echoed from the monitor. A red warning banner flashed across the screen:
WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED. INITIATING REMOTE WIPE PROTOCOL IN 60 SECONDS.
Camilla’s breath hitched. “Damn it! He’s got a dead-man’s switch linked to his phone. The moment his cellular device connected to the corporate server downtown, it triggered an auto-destruct sequence on this machine!”
“Can you bypass it?” Victor asked, stepping closer, his hand resting near his holster.
“If I have thirty seconds, yes,” Camilla said, her fingers blurring across the keys as she hammered out a rapid-fire sequence of override commands, her mind racing against the flashing digital countdown: 54... 53... 52...
“Talk me through it,” Matteo commanded, his calm, steady voice anchoring her rising panic.
“He’s routing the firewall through an encrypted proxy in Zurich,” she explained rapidly, sweat beading on her forehead. “If I sever the local network connection before he handshakes with the master server, I can trap the data packets right here on the local drive before they incinerate.”
“Do it,” Matteo ordered.
Without hesitation, Camilla reached out and violently ripped the ethernet cable straight out of the back of the desktop tower, while simultaneously hitting the enter key to execute her custom firewall quarantine script.
The screen flickered violently. The red warning banner blinked twice, hesitated, and then dissolved.
Replaced by a bright green folder labeled: PROJECT_MIDAS_MASTER_LEDGER.
Victor let out a low whistle of respect. Matteo’s lips curved into a genuine, dangerous smile.
Camilla slumped back against the edge of the glass desk, exhaling a massive breath of relief as her trembling hands fell into her lap.
“We got it,” she whispered. “Every single transaction, every forged signature authorization, and every offshore account routing number he used to launder the two and a half million dollars. It’s all right here.”

Matteo reached out, placing his hand gently on her shoulder. The touch was warm, firm, and completely devoid of the predatory ownership that Trent had always weaponized against her.
“Pack your things, Camilla,” Matteo said quietly. “Our game of chess is about to enter its final round. And tomorrow morning, Mr. Larson is going to learn what happens when you steal from the wrong people in Manhattan.”
