Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

The executive boardroom of Sterling & Vance on the forty-second floor of a Midtown skyscraper was designed to intimidate. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooked the sunlit expanse of Central Park, while a massive, polished mahogany table dominated the center of the room, surrounded by high-backed leather chairs.

At 9:00 AM sharp, the heavy oak doors swung open.

Trent Larson walked in, impeccably dressed in a charcoal bespoke suit, a confident, self-assured smirk plastered across his handsome face. He carried a leather briefcase under his arm, ready to execute the final phase of his grand exit. He had his private flight to Zurich booked for 2:00 PM, his capital safely tucked away in an untouchable offshore trust, and as far as he knew, Camilla was safely terrified and locked out of the loop.

His smirk vanished the moment he stepped into the room.

Sitting at the head of the massive mahogany table was Matteo Rossi, dressed in his immaculate charcoal suit, calmly sipping a cup of black espresso. Flanking him on either side were Victor and two federal-grade corporate forensic investigators holding heavy leather portfolios.

At the far end of the table, sitting quietly in a crisp white blouse and blazer, sat Camilla.

Trent stopped dead in his tracks, his hand freezing on the brass handle of the boardroom door. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost in broad daylight.

“What... what is this?” Trent stammered, his polished corporate facade shattering into a million jagged pieces. “Security! How did these people get in here? This is a private corporate floor!”

“Close the door, Mr. Larson,” Matteo said smoothly, not even looking up from his espresso cup. His voice carried the weight of an absolute monarch addressing a petty thief.

Victor stepped forward, casually sliding the heavy oak door shut and locking it with a sharp, echoing click.

Trent’s eyes darted frantically between Matteo, the investigators, and Camilla. When his gaze landed on Camilla, sitting composed, calm, and completely unfazed at the end of the table, absolute panic set in.

“Camilla,” Trent muttered, his voice dropping into a desperate, pleading whine. “What did you do? Did you talk to these lunatics? You’re destroying both of us! You signed those papers!”

“I didn't sign anything authorizing the theft of two and a half million dollars, Trent,” Camilla said, her voice ringing clear and steady across the massive room. She stood up slowly, picking up a remote control from the table and clicking it once.

Behind Trent, the massive smart-board mounted on the wall flickered to life.

Instantly, glowing data files, transaction logs, IP addresses, and digital signature logs filled the display. Highlighted in bright, glaring red was the exact timestamp, proxy routing code, and forged cryptographic key that Trent had used to frame her while looting the firm’s offshore accounts.

“That’s—” Trent choked out, taking a panicked step backward until his spine hit the locked mahogany door. “That’s fabricated! Those are forged documents!”

“They’re authenticated by three independent forensic auditors and backed up by the complete server logs we pulled from your personal desktop last night,” one of the investigators stated coldly, snapping open a leather folder. “Federal banking regulators have already frozen your primary clearing accounts, Mr. Larson. Your passport has been flagged at every international port of entry in the tri-state area. You aren't boarding a flight to Zurich today.”

Trent stared at the screen, his chest heaving as reality finally crashed down around him with the force of an avalanche. All his planning, all his corporate maneuvering, all his arrogance—demolished in less than twelve hours by a woman he thought he had completely broken.

He spun around, slamming his fist against the locked door in a sudden fit of rage. “Let me out of here! You can't do this! Do you know who I am?!”

“We know exactly who you are, Mr. Larson,” Matteo said softly, finally standing up from his chair. He walked slowly around the mahogany table until he stood just inches from the trembling man.

Matteo didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.

“You are a thief who thought he could use an innocent woman as a human shield while playing in high-stakes waters,” Matteo whispered, looking down at Trent with eyes carved from absolute ice. “And in my world, men who hide behind women don't get a trial. They get erased.”

Before Trent could scream, Victor and the associates moved with lightning speed. Two heavy pairs of industrial zip-ties clicked tightly around Trent’s wrists behind his back.

As they dragged the kicking, screaming man toward the private service elevator at the back of the boardroom, Trent locked eyes with Camilla one last time. His face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated terror and hatred.

Camilla didn't flinch. She simply watched him go, feeling the last remaining chain around her soul finally shatter into dust.
