Chapter 2 - The Ghosts of Oakridge High

The revelation hung in the sterile air of the hospital room like a live wire, crackling with decades of unresolved pain. Callum stared at Elena, the sharp lines of her face suddenly stripping away the years, connecting the exhausted adult nurse to the terrified teenager he had nearly forgotten.

"Oakridge High," Callum murmured, his voice laced with sudden, heavy realization as fragments of a long-buried past slammed back into place. "You were Elena Vance. Back then... your family lived on the west side before your father’s contracting business went under."

Elena stood up slowly, wiping her wet hands on her blue scrubs, her posture rigid. "My father didn't just go under, Callum. He was ruined. Destroyed overnight. And you and your father were the ones who orchestrated the corporate buyout that stripped away every single asset my family owned, driving him to a grave he didn't deserve."

Callum’s chest tightened, a sharp pain shooting through his fractured ribs. "Wait. Hold on. My father ran Harte Construction, yes, but—"

"Your father used predatory clauses, falsified safety violations, and insider municipal connections to steal my father's municipal contracts," Elena cut in, her voice trembling with a lifetime of pent-up fury. "We went from living in a comfortable home to living out of a rusted station wagon within six months. Those boys in the parking lot? They were the sons of the subcontractors your father bribed to testify against mine. I sat in that parking lot every day because I had nowhere else to go while my mother worked three cleaning jobs."

Callum struggled to sit up, ignoring the vicious protests of his body. "Elena, I was seventeen. I didn't know anything about my father's backroom deals. I was just a kid playing football and worrying about college applications."

"You might not have signed the contracts, Callum, but you benefited from every single brick of our ruin," she said, her eyes flashing with a dangerous mix of sorrow and resentment. "When I saw your name on the emergency admission log after that highway crash, do you have any idea what went through my mind? I stood over your bed while you were unconscious and held a syringe of potassium chloride in my hand, wondering how easy it would be to balance the scales of the universe."

The confession dropped like a physical blow. Callum stared into the eyes of the woman standing over him, realizing that the person holding his lifeline in this hospital was the very person whose life his family had destroyed. Yet, beneath her fierce anger, he didn't see a murderer; he saw a wounded girl who had fought tooth and nail to claw her way out of poverty, putting herself through nursing school just to survive.

"Why didn't you do it?" Callum asked quietly, his voice devoid of defense. "Why save me?"

Elena turned away, wiping a stray tear angrily from her cheek. "Because I'm a nurse. And because killing you wouldn't bring my father back. But don't flatter yourself, Callum. I didn't stay by your bedside out of forgiveness. I stayed because I needed a front-row seat when the rest of your pristine, billionaire life finally came crashing down."
