Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Reckoning

Marcus spun around, sneering as he recognized the nurse. "Ah, the vengeful daughter. Perfect timing. You can list the official cause of death as natural complications from his crash injuries."

"I’m not here to watch him die, Marcus," Elena said, her eyes locked onto his with icy precision. "I’m here because the hospital security detail and the Seattle Police Department’s financial crimes unit are currently standing outside your luxury SUV in the parking garage."

Marcus froze, his hand halting above the IV valve. "What are you talking about?"

"I’m talking about the fact that while you were busy trying to finish off a dying man, I spent the last three hours uploading every single encrypted fraudulent ledger, safety violation memo, and the audio recording of your confession right now to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the state attorney general, and every major news outlet in the country," Elena replied, stepping further into the room as two uniformed police officers and a detective flanked her sides, their badges gleaming under the dim lights.

Marcus lunged for the door, but the officers intercepted him instantly, slamming him against the wall and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp, echoing snap. As they hauled the struggling, cursing COO out of the room, the heavy silence of the hospital returned.

Callum exhaled a breath he felt he had been holding since the day of the crash. He looked up at Elena, who stood by the foot of his bed, her chest rising and falling rapidly.

"You recorded him," Callum said softly.

"I’ve been recording every conversation in this room since day three, Callum," Elena said, setting her clipboard down on the rolling tray. "When I realized who you were, I intended to use your company's corruption to tear down your empire legally. But when I found out Marcus tried to murder you on that highway... I realized true justice wasn't about revenge. It was about exposing the truth."

She looked down at the floor for a long moment, the tension of twenty years finally draining from her shoulders. "Your father's crimes are exposed. The company will be dismantled, restructured, and every penny of illicit profit will be returned to the families your father and Marcus destroyed—starting with mine."

Callum didn't look angry. He looked at peace. For the first time since the truck hit his pickup, the fog in his mind was completely gone.

"Start with yours," Callum agreed quietly, extending his hand across the space between them. "And let’s build something new on a foundation that won't ever collapse."

Elena looked at his outstretched hand, hesitation flickering in her eyes for a split second before a genuine, ghosts-exorcised smile finally broke across her face. She reached out and firmly shook his hand.

Spring had finally arrived in Kansas, and for the first time in twenty years, the ground beneath them felt entirely solid.
