Chapter 1 - The Dark Discovery in the Bridal Suite

The weight of the tiny black USB drive in my breast pocket felt heavier than a lead brick as I knelt on the plush hotel carpet, looking into my grandson Leo's frightened brown eyes. Ten minutes. That was all the time I had before the string quartet stopped playing the prelude and I was expected to walk down the aisle to marry Florence Fairmont, the woman twenty-three years younger than me who had supposedly captured my heart.
Instead of walking toward the altar, I stood up, gently picked Leo into my arms, and walked straight past the sparkling chandeliers of the ballroom hallway toward a quiet, secluded service alcove near the back exit. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.
"Leo, sweetheart, look at Grandpa," I whispered, keeping my voice steady so I wouldn't frighten him further. "Did anyone else see you take this from Mommy?"
Leo shook his head vigorously, burying his face in the shoulder of my tailored tuxedo jacket. "No. Mommy said I have to be brave. She said Aunt Rebecca knows how to find you."
I pulled out my phone and dialed my sister Rebecca immediately. It rang twice before she answered, her voice breathless and frantic, filled with absolute panic.
"Jonathan?! Oh, thank God! Where are you? Are you married yet?!" Rebecca cried out, the sound of car tires screeching in the background.
"No, Bex, I'm not. I'm with Leo," I replied tightly. "He just handed me a USB drive. He said Florence hit Christina. What the hell is going on? Christina told me she had a migraine and was staying home."
A harsh sob broke over the phone line. "She lied, Jonathan! She lied to you! Two hours ago, Christina tried to come to the hotel to talk you out of this wedding. She found out something horrifying about Florence's past and the company funds. But Florence intercepted her in the underground parking garage. I found Christina locked inside the trunk of her own car, unconscious, blue in the face, and barely breathing! I'm rushing her to St. Jude’s Emergency Room right now!"
The blood drained entirely from my face. The room tilted. The illusion of the graceful, loving woman waiting for me in ivory lace shattered into a million jagged pieces. Florence hadn't just been playing a role; she was a predator, and my daughter was paying the price for uncovering her secrets.

"Hold on, Bex," I said, my voice dropping into a cold, dangerous register I hadn't used since my corporate executive days. "Get Christina the help she needs. I'm about to show 120 guests exactly who they came to celebrate."
I slipped the USB drive back into my pocket, handed Leo safely to a trusted hotel manager with strict instructions to lock him in a secure management suite, and turned back toward the ballroom doors. The music had just shifted to the traditional wedding march. It was time for the groom to enter.
