Chapter 2 - The Red Dress and the Public Entrance

The annual Vance Development Foundation gala was the premier social event of the autumn season. Held inside the grand ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton, it was a glittering sea of crystal chandeliers, black-tie luxury, expensive champagne, and Chicago’s corporate elite. Julian had spent weeks boasting about the event, telling me it was his crowning achievement as company president.

Two nights after my meeting with Rebecca, Julian stood in front of the bedroom mirror adjusting his silk bow tie—the exact one I had painstakingly selected for him three years prior.

"You're not riding with me tonight, Claire," Julian said smoothly, not even turning around to look at me as I zipped up my emerald silk gown. "The board needs me there early for a private briefing. Take an Uber, or drive your own car. I’ll see you inside the reception hall."

"An emergency board briefing on a Saturday night?" I asked, my voice entirely level.

He paused, a flicker of irritation crossing his handsome face before he masked it with an easy, practiced smile. "The company is expanding, Claire. High-stakes development requires sacrifice. Just be there by seven. Don't embarrass me in front of the investors."

"I would never dream of embarrassing you, Julian," I replied quietly.

He kissed the top of my head—a cold, perfunctory gesture—and walked out of the house.

Ten minutes later, Leo walked out of his bedroom wearing a miniature custom navy-blue tuxedo that matched his father’s down to the silk lapels. He looked like a miniature gentleman, but his small face was pale, tight with an anxiety that no nine-year-old boy should ever have to carry.

"Are you ready, buddy?" I asked, kneeling down to straighten his pink silk tie.

"Mom," he whispered, looking up into my eyes. "Dad isn't at a board meeting."

"I know, Leo."

"How do you know?"

"Because I know everything." I stood up, smoothing my dress, and checked my purse one last time. The heavy legal envelope rested securely against my lipstick and car keys. "Let's go show them how a Vance handles a storm."

When our car pulled up to the grand entrance of the hotel, the valet rushed to open our doors. Walking into the soaring marble foyer, the low murmur of classical string music drifted down from the balcony. But as Leo and I stepped through the grand arched double doors into the ballroom, the atmosphere shifted instantly.

Conversations died out mid-sentence. Heads turned. Whispers rippled through the nearest tables like a cold gust of wind.

I felt a sickening drop in my stomach, but I kept my spine straight, holding my chin high. I turned my head toward the private VIP receiving line near the grand staircase.

Julian had arrived.

And he hadn't come alone.

Clinging to his arm, draped in a scandalous, backless crimson evening gown that practically screamed for attention, was Chloe Mercer. She wasn't hiding in the shadows, nor was she pretending to be a low-level corporate staff member assisting with logistics. She was standing right beside him, her hand looped through his elbow, laughing softly at something he whispered into her ear.

Julian looked radiant, intoxicated by his own arrogance. He wore the exact expression of a man who believed he had successfully cheated the system, manipulated his family, and secured absolute dominance over his world.

He looked directly across the ballroom floor at me.

And then, incredibly, he smiled. A slow, deliberate, mocking smirk. He wanted everyone in this room—every client, every employee, every rival executive—to see that he had replaced his wife with a younger, flashier model right under their noses.

My throat tightened so violently I could barely draw breath. The room began to spin, the glittering lights blurring into a chaotic streak of gold and white.

Suddenly, a small, warm hand slipped into mine.

I looked down. Leo was staring up at me, his eyes fierce and protective.

"Mom," he whispered urgently.

"I’m okay, sweetie," I lied, my voice shaking.

"No, you’re not. Don't look at them like that." Leo squeezed my fingers with surprising strength. "Don't cry. Look at me, Mom. Just look at me."

Those nine words hit me like a splash of freezing water. My son—my brilliant, courageous little boy—was standing here trying to anchor me in the middle of a public humiliation designed to destroy our dignity.

In that fraction of a second, the grief evaporated, instantly replaced by a cold, razor-sharp fury. The victim mentality vanished. I was Claire Vance, and I was not going to let my son watch his mother crumble.

I blinked hard, squared my shoulders, and reached into my designer handbag. My fingers brushed against the crisp, sealed legal envelope.

Across the room, Julian whispered something else to Chloe. She giggled, tossing her dark hair over her shoulder. Then, Julian began steering her directly across the polished parquet floor toward where Leo and I stood near the pillar.

He wanted to finish the performance. He wanted a public subjugation.

"Claire," Julian said loudly enough to ensure that half the executive board and the surrounding guests could hear every syllable. "I didn't expect you to arrive so early. Though, frankly, I think we need to have a little private conversation."

I didn't flinch. I didn't step back. "There is nothing private to discuss here, Julian."

His charismatic smile tightened, his jaw clenching beneath his freshly shaved skin. "This really isn't the appropriate place for a domestic scene, Claire. Let's not make a spectacle of ourselves."

"You brought your office mistress to a high-profile charity gala where our nine-year-old son is standing right beside me," I replied, my voice carrying clearly across the silent, watching crowd. "You made the spectacle, Julian. I am merely attending it."

Chloe stepped forward, her face flushing with an arrogant, venomous smirk. She crossed her arms, letting the red silk drape dramatically. "Maybe we should all stay calm and act like civilized adults here, Mrs. Vance. Julian has a lot of important people watching him tonight."

I turned my icy gaze fully onto her, letting the silence stretch for three agonizing seconds until her smile faltered. I didn't say a single word to her. I treated her like what she was: an expensive, temporary distraction of no consequence.

Then, unexpectedly, Leo let go of my hand.

"Leo?" I whispered, looking down in alarm.

My son didn't answer. He stepped past me, his small patent-leather shoes clicking against the hardwood floor as he walked straight toward his father.

Julian’s arrogant expression instantly melted, replaced by a flash of genuine panic. He knelt down onto one knee, dropping Chloe’s arm.

"Hey, buddy," Julian said, his voice dropping into a falsely sweet, paternal tone that made my skin crawl. "What are you doing out here? This is a grown-up party."

Leo stopped two feet away from his father. He didn't look angry; he looked terrifyingly calm.

"Dad," Leo asked, his clear, high voice cutting cleanly through the ambient murmur of the ballroom. "Do you remember borrowing my phone last Saturday afternoon?"

Julian’s face went entirely blank. The color drained from his cheeks, leaving him looking sickly under the warm amber chandeliers. "What are you talking about, Leo?"

"You said your phone battery was dead and you needed to call your office," Leo continued steadily, pulling his small black smartphone out of his blazer pocket with two hands. "So you took mine for twenty minutes while you sat in the driveway."

I felt my stomach tighten into a hard knot.

Leo pressed a button on the screen. "I forgot to turn off my voice recorder app after my school project interview. I didn't realize it until yesterday."

Julian surged forward, his hand clawing out toward the phone. "Give me that right now, Leo!"

Several prominent investors and local journalists standing nearby turned sharply at the sudden commotion, taking a few steps closer to watch the unfolding drama.

I stepped instantly between my husband and my son, my voice cracking like a whip. "Julian! Don't you dare touch him!"

Leo backed up a half-step, safely behind my skirt, but he kept his eyes locked on his father’s horrified face. He looked up at me, his expression unreadable.

"What did you hear on that recording, sweetie?" I asked softly.

Leo’s voice dropped into the quiet space between us, clear as a bell for everyone within ten feet to hear: "Dad and Chloe talking in the car about the money they were hiding."

Julian lunged forward again, his mask of corporate charm completely shattered, revealing a desperate, cornered animal.

That was the exact moment Rebecca Sloan’s instructions flashed through my mind: Preserve everything. If he tries to move or hide assets, hand him the notice.

I reached deep into my purse, pulled out the heavy, sealed attorney’s envelope, and shoved it directly into Julian’s chest, forcing him back.

"You need to read this very carefully before you do anything else, Julian," I said coldly.

Julian’s shaking fingers tore open the flap. His eyes darted frantically across the legal letterhead, scanning the formal notices, the preservation orders, and the bolded paragraphs.

And then, his face turned the color of ash when his eyes hit the exact line detailing the unauthorized wire transfer of $90,000 from our joint account.

Chloe leaned in frantically, her voice dropping into a panicked hiss. "Julian! What does it say? What is that?"

Julian didn't answer her. He couldn't speak.

Instead, it was Leo who answered, holding up his phone while staring directly at Chloe.

"Is it about Harbor Point?" Leo asked innocently.

I froze, turning my head sharply toward my son. "What is Harbor Point, Leo?"

Chloe went completely, terrifyingly still, her painted lips parting in silent horror.

Julian whipped his head around toward our son, his eyes wide with absolute terror. "Leo... where on earth did you hear that name?"

May you like

Leo tapped the screen of his phone, holding it up like a trophy. "You said it, Dad. Right into the recorder."

And in that exact fraction of a second, standing in the middle of the glittering ballroom, I realized something that sent a shiver straight down my spine: the affair with Chloe Mercer wasn't even the worst secret Julian had been hiding.
