Chapter 3 - The Harbor Point Paper Trail

The silence that fell around our little circle in the middle of the grand ballroom was heavier than the crystal chandeliers overhead. For three agonizing seconds, nobody breathed. Julian stood frozen, a statue of absolute panic in a custom-tailored tuxedo, while Chloe looked like she had just swallowed broken glass.

"Harbor Point," I repeated slowly, my gaze shifting from my pale husband back to the trembling office manager. "Care to explain what Harbor Point is, Julian? Or should we ask Leo to replay the audio right here for your board of directors?"

Several high-profile investors—including Vance Development’s primary financial backer, Arthur Vance Sr.—had stopped milling about and were now drifting closer, drawn by the palpable tension.

Julian swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. He grabbed my arm, his fingers digging in with desperate force. "Claire... let's not do this here. Let's go to the private suite upstairs. We can talk about this like adults. Please."

"Don't touch me," I said, jerking my arm free with enough force to make him stumble half a step back. "You made this public when you paraded your mistress in front of my son and every client we know. Now we talk right here, or I hand Leo's phone to your senior partners."

Chloe took a nervous step backward, her designer heels clicking sharply against the parquet floor. "This is insane," she muttered, her voice trembling. "Mr. Vance, tell your wife to stop this harassment. I'm leaving."

"You aren't going anywhere, Chloe," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from behind us.

We all turned. Arthur Vance Sr., the retired founder of the company and Julian’s father, had stepped out of the VIP circle. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his sharp, aging eyes fixed on Julian with a look of cold disappointment that cut deeper than any insult.

"Dad," Julian stammered, his professional composure completely disintegrating. "This is just... a misunderstanding. Claire is overwrought—"

"Shut up, Julian," the old man rumbled, walking slowly toward us with his cane tapping rhythmically against the floor. He turned his gaze to me. "Claire, my dear. What is this about Harbor Point?"

Before I could answer, Leo stepped forward, holding up his black smartphone. "Grandpa, I have the whole thing recorded. Dad bought a luxury condominium at Harbor Point under a shell company. And he put Chloe's name on the deed using money from our family accounts."

A collective gasp rippled through the surrounding crowd. Whispers erupted instantly, bouncing off the marble pillars.

Julian’s face flushed a deep, mottled crimson. "Leo, shut your mouth! You don't know what you're talking about!"

"Don't you ever yell at my son again," I snapped, stepping protectively in front of Leo. I turned back to Rebecca Sloan’s legal letter in Julian’s trembling hands. "The letter you're holding, Julian, isn't just about ninety thousand dollars. It’s a formal audit of Vance Development's subsidiary accounts. Rebecca already flagged the shell company transactions yesterday morning."

Arthur Vance Sr. stared at his son, his expression hardening into stone. He reached out, snatched the legal document directly from Julian’s nerveless fingers, and scanned the first two pages. His eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.

"A shell company," the older man said, his voice dropping an octave. "You used corporate development funds to buy real estate for your mistress while bleeding our family accounts dry?"

"Father, let me explain—" Julian stammered, stepping forward with his hands raised pleadingly. "The market was volatile, I needed to diversify—"

"You embezzled corporate funds and committed marital fraud," Arthur interrupted coldly. He turned his heavy gaze to Chloe, who was now backing away toward the exit doors. "And as for you, Miss Mercer—human resources will process your immediate termination first thing Monday morning, followed by a criminal referral for corporate conspiracy."

Chloe let out a choked gasp, turned on her stiletto heel, and bolted across the ballroom floor, desperately weaving through the shocked crowd of investors as the red silk gown trailed behind her like a banner of defeat.

Julian stood paralyzed in the center of the room, abandoned by his mistress, exposed by his own son, and condemned by his own father. The glittering charity gala had transformed into his executioner's stage, and he had built the gallows himself.
