Chapter 1 - The Digital Stab in the Dark

The tablet screen glowed with a sickening clarity under the flickering overhead lights of the black SUV. Bevis Morgan stood on the wet Langley tarmac, rain misting his cropped gray hair, holding the device out like an evidence marker. On the screen, Josephine’s public social media page blazed with a freshly uploaded video titled “Strict Parenting 101: Teaching Kids Resilience.”
Elias Williams didn't grab the tablet. He didn't smash it against the metal body of the vehicle. Instead, his dark eyes scanned the metrics. Within twelve minutes of posting, the video had crossed twenty thousand views. The comment section was a toxic cesspool of laughing emojis, heart reactions, and vile remarks from internet strangers praising Josephine and her sisters for "toughening up a spoiled brat."
The thumbnail showed Matilda’s tear-streaked face under the harsh glare of the porch light, her little hands pressed against her chest.
"They monetized it, Colonel," Bevis said quietly, his voice dangerously low. "Your sister-in-law Brooke set up an automated ad toggle on her creator profile. They are making revenue off your daughter's public humiliation."
A muscle ticked along Elias’s jawline. This wasn't just a malicious family prank anymore; it was a broadcasted violation of a minor, a direct breach of existing custody protective clauses, and a digital war crime committed against an eight-year-old child.
"Is the local unit coordination locked in?" Elias asked, his voice completely devoid of human warmth.

"State Police unit 404 is five minutes out from your property line. Child Protective Services emergency liaison is patched into my secure comms channel. And your attorney just emailed the emergency ex parte custody injunction signed by Judge Holloway ten minutes ago," Bevis recited rapidly, tapping the glass. "They are trapped, Elias. Every single one of them thinks they’re untouchable because it's 'family discipline.' They have no idea what a military command extraction looks like."
Elias slid into the back seat of the lead SUV, the door thudding shut with a heavy, satisfying seal. "Let's go home."
