Chapter 3 - The Cold Sweep of Justice

"E-Elias?" Bonnie stammered, her hands flying up instinctively as if trying to block a physical blow. "What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be in Denver—"

Elias didn't say a single word. He simply stepped past her with absolute authority, his heavy boots striking the hardwood floor like hammer blows.

"Hey! You can't just barge into my mother's house!" Josephine shrieked, marching out of the kitchen with her phone still clutched in her hand, her face flushed with indignant rage. "What is the meaning of this? Vanessa, start recording this, he's harassing us—"

"Put the phone down, Josephine," a sharp, gravelly voice commanded.

Bevis Morgan stepped through the doorway behind Elias, flashing a heavy gold federal badge that immediately neutralized Vanessa’s attempt to lift her camera. Behind them, State Trooper Sergeant Miller stepped forward, flanked by two female child-welfare officers.

"Col. Elias Williams, United States Army," Elias spoke, his voice cutting through the living room like shattered glass. "Acting under emergency ex parte custody order docket number 2026-CV-8891, issued twenty minutes ago by Circuit Judge Holloway. You are currently in violation of federal interstate custodial interference codes, child endangerment mandates, and cyber-harassment laws."

Erin turned pale white, dropping her bowl of popcorn onto the rug. "This is a family matter! You can't do this over a little joke—"

"A joke?" Elias’s voice rose just enough to make all four sisters flinch backward. "You locked an eight-year-old child barefoot on concrete in freezing weather, doused her feet in chemical wash, recorded her terror for internet clout, and locked her in a utility closet. That isn't a joke. That is a criminal conspiracy."

"Mom! Call your lawyer!" Josephine panicked, looking desperately at Bonnie.

"My lawyer is currently briefing the district attorney on three counts of felony child abuse and malicious exploitation of a minor," Elias interrupted smoothly, walking straight toward the hallway. "And trust me, Josephine... the military doesn't take kindly to officers' spouses running digital torture rings while hiding behind dependents' immunity."

As Elias walked past them toward the hallway, he bypassed the adults entirely, heading straight for the locked utility door.
