Chapter 3 - The Grand Entrance

The revolving doors of the Pierre Hotel spun smoothly, admitting two figures whose arrival instantly altered the atmospheric pressure of the grand ballroom.

Conversations faltered. Champagne flutes paused halfway to lips. Heads turned in a synchronized wave of shock and curiosity as the ballroom doors swung open to reveal Viktor Vance walking arm in arm with Alex Sterling.

The transformation was absolute. The woman who had fled the mezzanine twenty minutes earlier in quiet panic was gone. In her place stood an apex predator draped in emerald silk, her posture immaculate, her chin held high, and an expression of cool, untouchable detachment on her face. And beside her walked Viktor Vance—a man who rarely graced public society events unless an empire was about to change hands.

Across the room, standing near the dais with Sabrina Kensington on his arm, Preston Holloway stopped breathing.

His glass of champagne slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor with a sharp, echoing crack that cut through the music. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him a ghastly, ashen grey.

"Preston, darling, what is wrong with you?" Sabrina murmured, following his terrified gaze across the room. When she saw Alex on the arm of Viktor Vance, her sophisticated facade fractured completely. "Why is she... what is she doing with him?"

Preston couldn't answer. His throat had closed up. He knew who Viktor Vance was. Everyone in New York finance knew that crossing Vance meant vanishing into a world of quiet ruin from which there was no appeal. And seeing Alex—the woman he had dismissed as a compliant, easily manipulated prop—walking in as Viktor's equal felt like a waking nightmare.

Viktor and Alex glided through the parting crowd as if they owned the room. Every eye was locked on them. Flashbulbs from socialite cameras began to pop, though nobody dared approach them.

They stopped ten feet away from the dais. Viktor casually released Alex’s arm, stepping back just a fraction to let her take center stage, though his hand remained possessively, protectively close to the small of her back.

"Alex," Preston choked out, his voice cracking slightly as he took a desperate step forward. "Where... where did you go? I looked everywhere for you. We need to talk, privately."

Alex looked at him the way one might look at a particularly unappealing insect crawling across a pristine desk. There was no anger left in her eyes—only a profound, crushing indifference that hurt him worse than any scream could have.

"There's nothing to discuss, Preston," Alex said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. "Unless, of course, you'd like to explain to managing partner Kensington why the Cayman accounts under your personal IP address are currently being audited by federal investigators and my legal counsel."

The color vanished from Preston’s face entirely. He stumbled backward, colliding with a service table and sending a tray of crystal glasses crashing down.

"You—you don't know what you're talking about," Preston stammered, sweat beading on his forehead. "Sabrina, don't listen to her, she's unstable, she's—"

"She is my chief financial consultant," Viktor Vance interrupted, his voice dropping into a register so cold and lethal that the entire ballroom fell completely dead silent. Viktor stepped forward, his silver-grey eyes locking onto Preston with terrifying intensity. "And she has just gifted my legal team every single ledger, shell company document, and forged signature you accumulated over the last three years."
