Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The silence in the grand ballroom was so absolute you could hear the distant hum of the hotel's HVAC system. Sabrina Kensington stared at Preston, her expression shifting from confusion to cold, calculating disgust. The engagement announcement scheduled for tonight was dead in the water before the microphone had even been switched on.
"Preston," Sabrina said, her voice dropping like falling ice. "Is it true? Did you use another firm's appraiser to funnel illicit funds through our corporate accounts?"
"Sabrina, please, it's a setup—she's trying to ruin me!" Preston lunged forward, grabbing at her sleeve, but she recoiled as if he carried the plague.
"Don't touch me," Sabrina hissed, stepping back toward her father, who had just materialized from the crowd with a face like thunder. The managing partner of Kensington & Sterling looked at Preston with unmitigated fury. Security guards in sleek black suits were already moving in from the perimeter of the room, their movements synchronized and efficient.
Alex watched the collapse of Preston’s carefully constructed world with a sense of profound, tranquil satisfaction. Every lie, every missed anniversary, every condescending remark, and every attempt to use her as a scapegoat had led to this exact moment. He had built his entire future on the assumption that she was weak. He had forgotten the golden rule of provenance: never underestimate the value of the person who holds the authenticating signature.
"Mr. Holloway," two federal agents in dark suits stepped out from the crowd, flashing badges that gleamed under the crystal chandeliers. "You're coming with us. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
Preston looked around frantically, realizing in horrifying clarity that there was no escape. He turned his desperate, pleading eyes toward Alex, a pathetic shadow of the arrogant man who had laughed in the mezzanine twenty minutes ago.
"Alex," he begged, his voice trembling. "Please. We built this together. Three years... remember the brownstone? Remember us?"
Alex tilted her head, her emerald silk gown catching the golden light as she stepped closer to Viktor Vance.
"I remember every single lie," Alex said softly, her voice carrying a finality that slammed the door on their entire history. "And as for the brownstone? I hear the neighborhood is lovely this time of year. Enjoy the cell block, Preston."
Two security guards flanked him immediately, their hands gripping his arms firmly. As they dragged him away toward the service elevators, the murmurs of the crowd swelled into a dull roar of gossip and camera flashes.
Sabrina and her father had already vanished into the VIP lounge, eager to distance their firm from the impending federal scandal.
Alex stood alone in the center of the grand ballroom for a moment, letting the weight of her old life truly lift from her shoulders. When she turned around, Viktor was watching her with an expression that was entirely devoid of cold calculation—it was warm, respectful, and deeply captivated.

"Well," Viktor murmured, offering her his arm once more. "That went better than expected."
"That," Alex replied with a cool, confident smile, "was just the appraisal. Now comes the real negotiation."
