Chapter 2 - The Confrontation at the Office and the Hidden Folder

By noon, my downtown corporate office felt like a sanctuary compared to the hurricane of frantic messages exploding across my phone screen. I sat at my glass-top desk on the fortieth floor, staring out at the Manhattan skyline, when my executive assistant, Maya, knocked softly on the door and pushed it open.

"Mariana, you have a visitor downstairs in the lobby," Maya said, her expression tight with disapproval. "It’s your husband. Security tried to stop him at the turnstiles because he’s screaming about an emergency, but he managed to slip past the front desk."

Before I could answer, the door swung open wide, and Daniel burst into my office.

He looked entirely unraveled. His expensive Italian silk tie was yanked loose, his hair was messy, and his face was flushed bright red with panic and rage. For a man who usually projected an aura of slick, corporate confidence, he looked like a cornered animal.

"Have you completely lost your mind, Mariana?!" Daniel yelled, slamming both hands down onto my desk so hard that my coffee mug rattled in its saucer. "Do you know what you've done? Mom is having a literal panic attack, the bank is calling about her mortgage default, and my credit cards are blocked! Everyone at the country club saw my card decline this morning! You humiliated me!"

I didn't flinch. I slowly leaned back in my leather ergonomic chair, folded my hands in my lap, and looked up at him with icy detachment.

"Finished?" I asked softly.

Daniel blinked, taken aback by my lack of fear or remorse. "What? Mariana, cut the act. Put the payments back on. Right now. You can't just cut off my mother and me because you threw a childish temper tantrums over an empty plate at dinner two nights ago!"

"An empty plate," I repeated, my voice dropping an octave into a dangerous murmur. "That’s what you call it when your mother insults me, treats me like trash, and feeds imported luxury meals to your brother’s wife while telling me I’ve run out of budget?"

"She was joking!" Daniel stammered, though his eyes darted away from mine. "You're taking things way too personally! You always do this—you work too much, you bring your corporate stress home, and you take it out on my family!"

I stood up slowly, walking over to the side credenza where a thick, heavy manila folder lay sealed with a red corporate audit label. I picked it up, walked back to my desk, and tossed it right onto the center of the glass surface, sliding it across until it bumped against his chest.

"Open it," I commanded.

Daniel frowned, looking down at the folder with mounting apprehension. "What is this?"

"Read it, Daniel. Page three, specifically. The forensic bank audit Robert pulled yesterday morning after I told him to trace every single dollar leaving our joint accounts over the last thirty-six months."

Hesitantly, Daniel picked up the folder, flipped open the cover, and scanned the first page. Within three seconds, all the remaining color completely drained from his face. His lips parted, but no sound came out. His knees wobbled, and he had to grip the edge of my desk to steady himself.

"This... this is a mistake," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling violently. "This doesn't mean what you think it means..."

"Oh, it means exactly what it says," I interrupted, my eyes flashing with absolute fury. "For three years, you told me your mother’s business ventures were failing, so I covered her mortgage. You told me your brother Aaron needed emergency loans for his medical bills, so I paid his car off. But according to these wire transfers, not a single penny of that money went to mortgage arrears or medical bills."

I leaned in close, letting every word cut like a razor blade.

"Every month, four thousand dollars was systematically funneled out of my business accounts into a secret off-shore shell company. And do you know whose name is registered as the sole beneficiary of that shell company, Daniel? It’s not your mother. And it’s not your brother."

Daniel squeezed his eyes shut, shaking his head in sheer terror. "Mariana... please... let me explain..."
