Chapter 3 - The Secret Shell Company and the Mistress Next Door

The silence in my office was so heavy you could hear the distant hum of the office ventilation system.

Daniel sank slowly into the visitor chair opposite my desk, his shoulders collapsing inward as if an invisible weight had crushed him. The arrogant, entitled husband who had marched into my office demanding financial restitution was gone, replaced by a pathetic, sweating coward caught red-handed in a web of monumental deception.

"Her name is Chloe Ruiz," I said quietly, reading directly from the audit report in the folder. "Your marketing director at the consulting firm. The same Chloe Ruiz who showed up at your mother’s house three weeks ago wearing expensive diamond tennis bracelets—bracelets that cost roughly twenty-eight thousand dollars. The same Chloe Ruiz who just purchased a luxury beachfront condo in Miami, paid entirely in cash, using wire transfers originating from your personal checking account—an account that was entirely funded by my income."

Daniel swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing violently. He looked up at me with desperate, pleading eyes. "Mariana, I can explain everything. It’s... it’s not what you think. Chloe had financial trouble, and she was being blackpresssed by some bad people, and I was just helping her out temporarily as a friend—"

"As a friend?" I scoffed, letting out a sharp, incredulous laugh. "You bought her a million-dollar condo and funded a luxury lifestyle for a mistress while I sat at home working eighty hours a week editing medical transcripts and running my tech firm to keep your family afloat?"

"We were just having a temporary lapse in judgment!" Daniel blurted out, hysteria creeping into his voice. "Marriage is about forgiveness, Mariana! We took vows! For richer, for poorer—"

"For richer, for poorer, Daniel. Not for richer, for mistress," I retorted, cutting him off completely. "And here is the most fascinating part of Robert’s forensic audit report. It wasn't just you draining my accounts for Chloe."

I flipped to page seven of the folder and pointed a manicured finger at a highlighted transaction string.

"Your mother knew," I said, every word dripping with ice. "Theresa didn't just tolerate your affair with Chloe—she actively helped you launder the money. Every time Theresa demanded extra cash for her 'estate upkeep' or 'medical emergencies,' half of that money was immediately re-routed through her personal savings account into Chloe’s corporate LLC. That’s why Theresa treated me like dirt at dinner. That’s why Lauren and Aaron looked at me with such smug contempt. They all knew I was funding your double life, and they laughed behind my back every single day, calling me the gullible cash cow who paid for their luxury dinners while funding your little side girlfriend."

The truth hung in the air between us, suffocating and brutal.

Daniel slumped further down in the chair, realizing that every single lie he had built over the last three years had completely unraveled. There was no escape. There were no excuses left to invent.

"What... what are you going to do?" Daniel whispered, his voice barely audible.

"What am I going to do?" I picked up my phone from the desk, unlocked the screen, and tapped the speakerphone icon. "Well, first, I’m going to call my divorce attorney, Marcus Vance—no relation to your toxic family, thankfully—and have him file an immediate asset-freezing injunction on every personal and corporate account tied to your name."

"Mariana, don't do that!" Daniel lunged forward, trying to grab my phone. "If you freeze my accounts, I’ll be ruined! The firm will fire me, my creditors will sue me—"

"Then I suggest you start packing your clothes out of my condo right now," I replied coldly, tapping the screen to initiate the call. "Because by five o’clock this afternoon, my security team will be changing the locks, and your mother’s estate will be officially foreclosed on by the bank for non-payment."

As Marcus picked up on the first ring, I looked straight into Daniel’s terrified, tear-streaked eyes and smiled. The empty plate at dinner had been the greatest gift Theresa could have ever given me. It had forced me to open my eyes. And now, the bill was finally coming due for the entire family.
