Chapter 2 - The Serpent in the Family Tree

The fragile peace of the reunion shattered the moment Arya’s phone buzzed aggressively in the kitchen. She had slipped away from the bedroom while Dante and Elena whispered of the past, desperate for a breath of ordinary air. Instead, she unlocked the screen to find an anonymous text message blinking in the dim light.
They know he is there. Leave now, or the girl dies first.
Arya’s blood ran cold. She shoved the phone deep into her pocket, pasting a trembling smile on her face as she walked back into the bedroom. But the atmosphere had shifted. Dante was alert, his instincts sharpening like a blade drawn from a sheath. He caught the slight pallor of her skin, the rigid tension in her shoulders.
"You okay?" Dante asked, his eyes narrowing.
"Fine," Arya lied, her voice pitching slightly too high. "Just work."
Dante stood up, his towering frame casting a long shadow across the worn floorboards. He knew the signs of an ambush better than anyone. He had spent a decade ripping control of the city from his traitorous uncle, Marco—the very man Elena had named as the architect of their destruction fifteen years ago. Marco had supposedly gone quiet, fading into the background after Dante seized the throne. But tyranny never truly sleeps; it merely waits for a weakness to exploit.
Before Dante could question her further, a heavy thud echoed from the front door.
"Stay here," Dante commanded, his hand instantly dipping beneath his jacket to grip the heavy steel of his weapon.
Arya didn't listen. She shadowed him down the narrow hallway as Dante wrenched the front door open. The landing was empty, save for a heavy, unmarked package resting on the welcome mat. Dante crouched, sliced the packing tape with a flick of a switchblade, and threw open the cardboard flaps. Inside lay a silver pocket watch—his father’s watch, which had been locked inside the Palermo estate’s deepest safe for over a decade.
Attached to the clasp was a fresh, blood-stained note: Welcome home, little princess. Tell your dog his time is up.
Dante’s face morphed into an expression of pure, unadulterated fury. The temperature in the hallway seemed to drop ten degrees. "Marco," he growled, the name tasting like venom. "The rat is still breathing."
"Who is Marco?" Arya demanded, stepping forward, refusing to be treated like a helpless civilian. "He knows we're here! He knows about Mom!"
"Marco is my uncle," Dante said, his voice dropping into a deadly, chilling register. "He thinks because I spared his life ten years ago, he has a claim to my kingdom. He doesn't know about you. If he thinks you're my weakness, he will burn this entire district to the ground to get to me."
May you like
Elena wheeled herself out of the bedroom, defying her weakness, her eyes wide with terror. "Dante, you have to get her out of here. If Marco has found us, no place in Palermo is safe."
"No one is running," Dante declared, his jaw set in stone. "Not anymore. We move to the compound tonight. My guards, my rules. Marco wants a war? I’ll give him a massacre."
