Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Within the Walls

The gunfire was deafening. It rattled the stained-glass windows of the study and shook dust from the vaulted ceiling. Arya pressed her back against the heavy oak door, the cold steel of the Glock trembling in her grip. Outside in the hallway, shouts, shattering glass, and the staccato pop of automatic weapons signaled that the compound’s defenses were buckling under a coordinated assault.

Boom.

A secondary explosion rocked the eastern wing, dangerously close to where Elena was sleeping. Panic clawed at Arya’s throat. She couldn't just sit here and wait to be slaughtered like an animal. She flipped the safety off the Glock, unlocked the door, and slipped out into the dimly lit corridor.

Smoke billowed from the staircase. Bullet holes scarred the hand-carved mahogany panels along the walls. Moving low, keeping to the shadows, Arya crept toward her mother’s room.

As she rounded the corner, she saw a figure standing outside the suite. It wasn't one of Dante’s men. It was a man in a tactical vest, holding a silenced pistol, trying to jam a heavy explosive charge onto the doorframe.

Arya’s heart hammered against her ribs. She didn't think; she reacted. She raised the Glock, remembering the basic gun safety drills she had forced herself to watch online during her quiet nights in Canada.

"Drop it!" she screamed, stepping out of the shadows.

The mercenary whipped around, a cruel smirk twisting his lips. He raised his pistol toward her chest.

Before he could pull the trigger, a thunderous crack echoed behind him. The mercenary’s head snapped back as a bullet tore through his shoulder, spinning him around before he collapsed lifelessly onto the Persian rug.

Dante stepped out of the smoke, his shirt stained with blood—not his own—his eyes blazing like a wild beast defending its den. He scanned the hallway, saw Arya standing unharmed, and let out a shaky breath that sounded like a curse.

"I told you to stay in the room," Dante growled, rushing over to grab her by the shoulders.

"My mother is in there!" Arya yelled back, tears finally breaking free.

Dante nodded, kicking the explosive charge away from the door and shoving it open. Inside, Elena was awake, sitting upright in bed, clutching an oxygen tank like a club, her face pale but resolute.

"You both need to move, now," Dante commanded, sweeping the perimeter of the room. "Marco brought a small army. They breached the courtyard. We have to get to the subterranean escape tunnel behind the wine cellar."

They moved as a unit—Dante shielding them with his own body, firing down the dim corridors as stray bullets chipped the stone walls around them. They reached the massive iron doors of the wine cellar, Dante punching a digital code into the wall panel and hauling the heavy latch open.

"Go," Dante ordered, pushing Elena’s rolling chair into the dark, stone-lined tunnel, with Arya right behind her.

"What about you?" Arya cried, grabbing his sleeve. "Dante, you can't fight them all alone!"

Dante looked down at her, offering a fierce, bloodied grin that mirrored the fierce legacy of the Valente bloodline. "This is my house, Arya. And nobody touches my family."

He slammed the heavy iron door shut, locking it from the outside, leaving Arya and her mother in the dark tunnel with only the sound of his muffled gunfire echoing through the stone above.
