Chapter 4 - The Vault of Truth

"Traitor!" Marcus gasped, stumbling backward in absolute terror as Victor’s gun swung around to cover the entire room.

"Shut up, you idiot!" Victor screamed, spittle flying from his lips, his eyes wild and desperate. He kept the gun trained squarely on Alejandro’s heart. "You think I wanted to spend the rest of my life taking orders from a tyrant who treats us like dogs? The rival syndicate offered me ten million dollars and safe passage out of the country to clear the board! It was supposed to be clean—a fatal heart attack from an unknown allergy. No bullets, no suspicion!"

Victor’s gaze flicked down toward me, cold calculation hardening his features. "And if this brat hadn't played hero with her stupid medical bag, it would have worked."

He took a menacing step forward, shifting the barrel of his gun so it pointed straight at my head. "Drop to your knees, Moretti, or the kid takes a bullet right now. Unlock the security shutters, or I turn her into a statistic."

My breath hitched in my throat. Terror paralyzed my little limbs. I squeezed my eyes shut, clutching my plush rabbit so hard my knuckles turned white, waiting for the deafening bang of the gun.

It never came.

Instead, the air in the room shifted with terrifying speed.

Before Victor could even squeeze the trigger, a dark blur erupted from the shadows beside the bookshelf. Alejandro Moretti—a man who had survived three decades of syndicate warfare and countless assassination attempts—moved with the terrifying, predatory agility of a caged panther.

With a deafening roar of fury, Alejandro lunged across the distance, smashing his heavy fist directly into Victor’s wrist.

Crack!

The sound of snapping bone echoed through the study. Victor shrieked in agony as his pistol flew from his shattered fingers, clattering uselessly across the polished marble floor. Before Victor could even stumble backward, Alejandro grabbed him by the throat, hoisting the massive, two-hundred-pound guard off the floor with one hand as if he weighed nothing at all.

"You thought," Alejandro snarled, his face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated wrath, "that because I poured a glass of wine in my own home, I didn't suspect the rats nibbling at the edges of my empire?"

Victor clawed frantically at Alejandro’s arm, his face turning purple as air failed him once again—though this time, there was no medical injector to save him. "Boss... please... mercy..."

"Mercy is something I reserve for people with honor," Alejandro hissed.

With a violent twist of his arm, Alejandro slammed Victor downward onto the shattered glass and marble floor. The guard hit the ground with a sickening thud, his eyes rolling back as he slumped into unconsciousness.

Marcus dropped to his knees immediately, pressing his forehead against the floorboards, shaking like a leaf in a hurricane. "Boss! I swear on my life, I knew nothing about the poison! Nothing! I was just following Victor’s orders!"

Alejandro stood over them, breathing heavily, adjusting the cuffs of his ruined shirt. He didn't look at Marcus. Instead, he slowly turned around, his fierce expression softening instantly as his dark eyes locked onto me.

He knelt down on one knee right in front of me. The terrifying mob boss of Chicago looked smaller somehow—more human.

"Are you hurt, Emma?" he asked, his voice unexpectedly gentle.

I shook my head slowly, still clutching my rabbit. "No, Mr. Moretti."

He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently resting on my head, smoothing my hair. "You saved my life tonight, little one. And in this house, debts are always paid in full."

Just then, the heavy steel security shutters groaned, unlocking with a mechanical click and sliding back open into the walls. A dozen armed loyal guards, alerted by the commotion, poured into the study, led by a pale, terrified woman in a simple cleaning uniform.

"Emma!" Mama shrieked, breaking through the line of guards. She dropped to her knees, throwing her arms around me and pulling me into a crushing, tearful embrace. "Oh, my God, Emma! Are you okay? What happened? The guards dragged me up here—what is going on?!"

She looked up, trembling in terror as she realized she was kneeling right in front of Alejandro Moretti, the syndicate boss standing over an unconscious traitor with blood on his sleeve.

"Elena," Alejandro said quietly, standing up to his full height.

Mama bowed her head immediately, shielding me with her body. "Mr. Moretti, please... whatever she broke, whatever she did, I’ll pay for it! Take my wages, take everything we have, just don't hurt my baby!"

Alejandro looked down at Mama, then back at me, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips for the first time that night.

"Rise, Elena," Alejandro commanded gently. "Your daughter didn't break anything. In fact, she just saved my life from a traitor who tried to murder me."

Mama blinked, stunned into absolute silence.

"From this night forward," Alejandro declared, his voice ringing out with absolute authority across the room, addressing every guard standing in the hall, "Elena and Emma are under my personal, absolute protection. No cleaner, no servant, no employee in this estate will ever live in fear again. And Emma... Emma will never have to worry about the cost of her medicine for as long as she lives. My personal medical fund will cover every doctor, every clinic, and every EpiPen she will ever need, until the day she graduates college."

May you like

Tears streamed down Mama’s face, not of fear, but of overwhelming relief. She pulled me tighter against her chest, whispering words of gratitude into my hair.

As for Victor, he and his co-conspirators were dragged away into the dark cells beneath the estate, never to be seen in Chicago again.
