Chapter 5 - The Sunrise Over Chicago

The golden rays of dawn broke across the Chicago skyline, casting a warm, brilliant orange glow through the towering arched windows of the Moretti estate. The air inside the grand mansion no longer felt cold and oppressive; it felt alive, safe, and entirely changed.

In the master dining hall, a massive breakfast spread had been laid out—pancakes, fresh fruit, and sweet pastries that Mama usually only let me look at through bakery windows.

Alejandro Moretti sat at the head of the long mahogany table, nursing a cup of black coffee. He wasn't wearing his usual terrifying black suit jacket; he wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking less like a syndicate king and more like a normal man enjoying a quiet morning.

Mama and I sat near the center of the table. I was busy devouring a giant chocolate-chip pancake, while my pink rabbit backpack rested safely on the chair beside me.

"You're awfully quiet this morning, Emma," Alejandro said, looking up from his coffee with a slight smirk. "Did the big scary mob boss still frighten you?"

I shook my head, swallowing my bite of pancake. "You’re not scary anymore. You just have bad guys working for you."

Alejandro let out a deep, genuine laugh—a rich, booming sound that echoed off the high ceilings, making the other guards stationed near the doors exchange bewildered glances. "Fair point, little hero. Fair point."

He reached into his pocket and slid a small, beautifully wrapped velvet box across the polished wood table toward me.

"What's this?" I asked, tilting my head.

"Open it," he smiled.

I popped the small clasp and lifted the lid. Inside, resting on a bed of dark silk, was a gorgeous, custom-designed medical case made of sleek pink leather, embroidered with glittering silver letters that spelled out EMMA'S EMERGENCY KIT. Inside were three brand-new, top-of-the-line EpiPens, along with a laminated card bearing Alejandro Moretti’s private signature and personal phone number.

"So you'll never run out," Alejandro said softly. "And so you know that no matter where you are in this city, you have someone watching your back, just like you watched mine."

I looked up at him, feeling a warm, fuzzy feeling bloom in my chest. I picked up the pink leather case, hugged it tight against my plush rabbit, and smiled.

May you like

Mama reached across the table, her hand resting warmly over mine, her eyes shining with tears of absolute peace. The shadow that had hung over our lives for years had finally vanished, swept away by courage, a four-year-old’s quick thinking, and a single pink backpack.

From that day on, the Moretti estate was no longer a place of fear for us. It was home. And I was no longer just the maid's daughter—I was the little girl who saved the king.
