Chapter 2 - The Security Ledger of Room 404

The digital clock on Claire’s nightstand glowed a harsh 2:14 AM.

She hadn't slept a wink. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Graham’s soaked wool coat, the naked desperation in his dark eyes, and the way his throat had worked when he swallowed back the words he was too terrified to speak on the rain-slicked sidewalk.

Quietly, so as not to wake her apartment building, Claire slipped out of bed, padded into her home office, and flipped open her encrypted laptop.

She didn't log into her standard auditing software. Instead, she accessed a secured, encrypted local drive where she had mirrored copies of every physical security log, keycard swipe history, and server access register she had managed to legally download during her final hour at Mercer Foundry.

As an independent forensic auditor, Claire’s firm had permission to pull digital trails, but physical security logs—the data feeds recording every time an elevator moved or a basement archive door was opened—were notoriously restricted. Yet, three weeks ago, an anonymous digital drop had landed in her secure inbox: a complete, unredacted security ledger covering the past eleven months of Mercer Foundry’s headquarters.

At the time, she had assumed it was corporate spam or a glitch. But tonight, viewing it through the lens of Graham’s desperate warning, the data came alive.

Her fingers flew across the keyboard, filtering the logs by date and specific restricted zones. Specifically, Basement Sub-Level 3—the secure vault where historical paper ledgers and offline backup drives were housed.

Her breath hitched.

November 14th, 11:42 PM.

Keycard used: E-Vance-04 (Marcus Vance).

Duration in Sub-Level 3: 47 minutes.

December 3rd, 1:15 AM.

Keycard used: E-Vance-04.

Duration in Sub-Level 3: 1 hour, 12 minutes.

January 22nd, 3:00 AM.

Keycard used: E-Vance-04.

Duration in Sub-Level 3: 2 hours.

Then, Claire noticed a second recurring keycard ID associated with those exact timestamp windows—a master override token assigned exclusively to the Office of the Chief Executive.

Graham Mercer’s token.

He hadn't just been auditing Marcus Vance behind the scenes; he had been tracking Marcus’s illegal data extractions down in the sub-basement for nearly a year. But why hadn't Graham fired him? Why hadn't he called the federal authorities months ago?

Because of the leverage.

Marcus Vance wasn't just an executive vice president; he was heavily embedded in the board of directors through family trusts, holding a vital block of voting shares that could legally oust Graham if a hostile takeover was triggered. If Graham moved against Marcus publicly without ironclad, bulletproof forensic proof—the exact kind of proof Claire’s independent audit was designed to generate—Marcus would tear the company apart from the inside out, dragging thousands of employees down with him.

And Graham had kept his distance from Claire for eleven months—keeping her at "Ms. Bennett," stopping at the brass inlay strip, never letting a personal spark ignite—because he knew that the moment anyone realized how close she was getting to the truth, she would become an immediate target.

Her phone buzzed violently against the wooden desk, shattering the quiet room.

It was a text message from an unknown, burner number. No greeting. Just a string of coordinates and a single sentence:

“If you open the final appendix of your audit report tomorrow morning, Ms. Bennett, your cleaning friend Rose won't be finishing her shift tomorrow night.”

Claire’s blood turned to ice water.

She stared at the screen, her pulse roaring in her ears. The burner number was pinging from a cell tower less than four blocks from her apartment building.

They weren't just watching Mercer Foundry. They were watching her.

Without hesitating, Claire grabbed her car keys, threw her leather jacket over her pajamas, and bolted out the door. She didn't call the police—she didn't know which local officers were already on Marcus Vance’s payroll. There was only one man in Pittsburgh who understood the full depth of the trap, and he was the exact man she had walked away from in the rain just hours earlier.
