Chapter 5 - A Clean Slate and a New Balance

Three months later, the spring sun was finally warming the brick sidewalks of downtown Pittsburgh, casting golden shafts of light across the bustling streets.
The sprawling headquarters of Mercer Foundry Group looked entirely different under new leadership. The dark, stifling atmosphere of corporate paranoia had been replaced by an open, transparent culture. The fraudulent shell companies had been dismantled, the employee reserve fund was fully restored with interest, and the federal investigation into Marcus Vance and his co-conspirators had resulted in a multi-count indictment that would keep him behind bars for decades.
On the top floor executive suite, the heavy mahogany desk had been pushed slightly to the side to make room for a sleek, modern drafting table covered in architectural blueprints and financial spreadsheets.
Claire stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, sipping a steaming mug of black coffee while reviewing the latest quarterly consolidation report for the firm’s seven manufacturing plants. The numbers were clean, transparent, and balanced down to the very last penny.
Behind her, the private office door clicked open.
A pair of warm arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind, and a familiar chin rested comfortably on her shoulder.
“You’re auditing the inventory sheets again on a Saturday morning, Ms. Bennett?” Graham teased softly, pressing a light kiss to the side of her neck.
“It’s not an audit, Mr. Mercer,” Claire smiled, leaning back against his chest and resting her hands over his. “It’s a verification. Big difference.”
“And what does your professional verification tell you about our current fiscal outlook?”
Claire turned around in his embrace, wrapping her arms loosely around his neck as she looked up into his dark, affectionate eyes.
“I’d say the risk factor is practically zero,” she whispered, a playful glint in her eye. “Though management still has a tendency to micromanage the coffee machine and spend entirely too much money on rain-soaked wool coats.”
Graham chuckled, pulling her flush against him. “Some investments are simply worth every single penny.”

Downstairs in the lobby, the security guards had long since removed the brass inlay strip from the marble floor, replacing it with polished, seamless stone that stretched smoothly from the entrance all the way to the executive elevators. There were no more barriers left to cross.
For the first time in their lives, the ledger was balanced, the past was fully accounted for, and their future was entirely open, clear, and bright.
