Chapter 3 - The Confession in the Dark

The harsh lines of tension slowly melted from Enzo’s face, replaced by a wave of profound, disbelieving relief that washed over his striking features like a sudden tide.

He let out a long, ragged breath, resting his forehead gently against mine. The sudden closeness was intoxicating. I could feel the heat radiating from his body, could hear the rapid, heavy thud of his heart matching the frantic rhythm of my own.

"Your cousin," Enzo muttered, a faint, disbelieving chuckle escaping his lips against my skin. "You let me sit in my car outside your building for twenty minutes, burning with enough jealousy to tear half of Milan apart, and you didn't think to mention he was family?"

"You didn't give me a chance!" I whispered back, my hands coming up to rest flat against his chest, feeling the solid, powerful muscle beneath his shirt. "You called me, gave me a direct order, hung up on me, and then sent a threatening text message! You don't exactly invite polite conversation when you're acting like a Victorian dictator!"

Enzo’s arms wrapped securely around my waist, pulling me flush against his body as if he needed the physical contact to convince himself I was real. His embrace was warm, strong, and undeniably protective.

"I am a dictator," he murmured softly, his lips brushing against my temple as he buried his face in my hair. "At least when it comes to the things that matter to me. And right now, the only thing that matters—the only thing I've allowed myself to care about for months—is standing right here in front of me."

A shiver ran down my spine. The professional barrier we had carefully maintained for eight long months had finally shattered into a million irreversible pieces.

"Why didn't you ever say anything?" I asked softly, my fingers curling slightly into the fabric of his shirt. "If you felt this way... why keep me at arm's length?"

Enzo pulled back slightly, his dark eyes searching my face with an expression of raw, vulnerable honesty that I had never seen on him before.

"Because of what I am, Mia," he said, his voice grave. "My world is full of blood, enemies, and shadows. When I brought you into my office eight months ago, you were bright, innocent, and entirely untouched by the darkness I navigate every single day. I told myself I would keep you safe by keeping you professional. I told myself that getting involved with my assistant—with you—would be a fatal mistake."

He lifted his hand again, gently cupping the side of my face, his thumb stroking my cheekbone with infinite tenderness.

"I bought you that Cartier bracelet on your birthday because I wanted to mark you as mine without having the right to say it," he confessed, a crooked, self-deprecating smile touching his lips. "Every time I saw you wear it, it drove me crazy with wanting. And tonight, when I saw that photo... something inside me broke. I realized I couldn't pretend anymore. I couldn't share even a fraction of your smile with anyone else—not even your cousin."

My heart swelled until it felt too big for my chest. All the doubts, all the secret late-night wishes I had buried deep inside my heart since the day I started working for him, dissolved into nothingness.

"You're an idiot, Enzo Lombardi," I whispered, smiling up at him through a sudden haze of emotion.

"I know," he replied softly.

Then, without another word, he lowered his head and captured my lips with his.

The kiss started slow, hesitant, as if he were testing whether I would pull away—whether this was all some magnificent, feverish dream. But the moment my fingers tangled into the hair at the nape of his neck and I pulled him closer, all restraint vanished.

Enzo groaned deep in his throat, his arms tightening around me like a steel trap as his lips devoured mine with a fierce, possessive hunger that made my head spin. It was a kiss born of eight months of agonizing restraint, unspoken longing, and raw, unfiltered passion. Every touch of his hands felt like a brand, every breath of his claiming me entirely.

By the time he finally pulled back, breathing heavily, resting his forehead against mine once more, my world had completely upended.

"Well," I murmured, my voice breathless and dazed. "I suppose that settles the question of the photograph."

Enzo chuckled, a rich, dark sound that vibrated against my chest. He pressed a soft, lingering kiss to the tip of my nose.

"The photograph stays," he murmured, his eyes glittering with dark amusement. "As long as the caption clearly states who he is. I won't have my city thinking my woman belongs to anyone else."

"Your woman?" I teased, raising an eyebrow. "I haven't agreed to anything yet, Mr. Lombardi."

May you like

Enzo’s smile turned wicked, his hands sliding down to curve firmly around my hips, lifting me effortlessly against his frame so my feet left the floor.

"Oh, piccola," he whispered against my ear, his voice dropping to a low, seductive promise. "You agreed the moment you answered my phone call tonight. Now... let's go inside. We have eight months of lost time to make up for."
