Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Boardroom

The golden morning sunlight was streaming through my apartment windows when I woke up, wrapped tightly in the warmth of heavy sheets and the solid, comforting weight of an arm thrown across my waist.

I turned my head on the pillow. Enzo was lying beside me, his eyes open, watching me with an expression of quiet contentment that felt entirely foreign on the ruthless mafia boss. His dark hair was messy against the white cotton pillowcase, and the fierce, lethal edge of the night before had been replaced by a relaxed, devastatingly handsome vulnerability.

"Good morning," he murmured, his voice thick with sleep as he pulled me closer against his chest.

"Good morning," I smiled, tracing a light finger along the sharp line of his jaw. "Though I can't help wondering what your security detail is going to say when they realize their boss spent the entire night parked outside my apartment."

Enzo smirked, kissing the pad of my finger. "Let them talk. For the first time in ten years, I actually slept through the night. They can deal with a little confusion."

We lingered in bed for another hour, talking and laughing in a way that felt entirely removed from the high-pressure world of Rowan Meridian and Milan's corporate elite. But reality, as it always did, eventually came knocking.

By 10:00 AM, we were walking through the polished glass doors of Lombardi Enterprises downtown.

The contrast between the intimacy of my apartment and the sterile, high-tech grandeur of the corporate headquarters was jarring. As we stepped out of the private elevator onto the forty-second floor, the whispering office chatter instantly died down. Employees bowed their heads respectfully, scurrying back to their desks as Enzo strode down the marble hallway with me walking step-for-step beside him.

For eight months, I had walked a few paces behind him, carrying his briefcase and managing his schedule like a dutiful shadow. Today, as Enzo reached out and casually laced his fingers through mine before pushing open the heavy glass doors to his private office, the entire floor stopped breathing.

I caught sight of our reflection in the mirrored glass wall: us, hand-in-hand, a united front. The invisible assistant was gone.

"Set my calendar for the afternoon clear," Enzo instructed as we walked into his expansive corner office overlooking the Milan skyline. "I'm taking my assistant out for a proper lunch. No meetings, no business."

"Mr. Lombardi, you have a board review at two o'clock with the regional stakeholders," I reminded him playfully, raising an eyebrow.

"Let them wait," Enzo said, pulling me gently against his chest and pressing a warm kiss to my temple. "My priorities have shifted."

Before I could reply, the intercom on my desk chimed loudly.

I stepped out of his arms, smoothing down my tailored navy skirt, and walked over to my desk just outside his private office. I pressed the flashing button.

"Yes?"

"Mia," the voice of Sarah, our senior acquisitions director, came through the speaker, sounding tight and anxious. "You need to come down to the legal archive room immediately. There's... there's a problem with the Q2 artifact acquisition ledger. Someone accessed the secure database from an unauthorized terminal early this morning, and several high-value shipping manifests have been flagged by the federal trade compliance office."

My blood ran cold.

The secure database? The restricted ledger containing the gray-market antiquities records—the very files Enzo had strictly forbidden anyone outside the inner circle to touch?

I looked up toward the glass doors of Enzo’s office. He was standing by the window, watching me with a sharp, perceptive gaze, having clearly heard the tension in my voice over the intercom.

Within a fraction of a second, the safe, sunlit world we had entered that morning fractured completely. Someone inside the company was trying to sink us—and they had chosen our most vulnerable digital vault to plant the bomb.
