Chapter 3 - The Queen’s Gambit

"I manage assets, Mr. Pendleton," Nadia said smoothly, cutting Darian off before he could utter a word. Her voice carried across the sudden silence that had fallen over the entire section of the ballroom. "Specifically, I specialize in toxic waste management. Cleaning up messes that powerful men leave behind when they think no one is watching."
Darian froze.
His eyes snapped to her face. She was not following the script. She had taken the narrative completely out of his hands, turning his cruel joke into a public indictment of the entire elite class in the room.
Pendleton’s smile vanished completely. The glass in his hand trembled slightly, the golden liquid sloshing against the crystal rim. "A rather unusual profession for someone of your... pedigree."
"Not at all," Nadia replied, stepping slightly forward, forcing Pendleton to involuntarily step back. The sheer force of her presence commanded the space around them. "The dirtier the floor, the more rigorous the scrubbing required. You’d be amazed at what accumulates in the dark corners of estates like this one. Dust, rot, things people try to sweep under the rug because they think their wealth makes them immune to decay."
The senator standing beside Pendleton coughed awkwardly, shifting his weight from foot to foot. Other guests nearby had stopped talking entirely, straining their ears to catch every word of the verbal dismantling taking place.
Darian stared at Nadia, a strange mixture of shock, disbelief, and a burning, unfamiliar surge of respect igniting in his chest.
She wasn't playing his game anymore. She was playing her own—and she was winning.
Pendleton’s face darkened with fury. He looked past Nadia to Darian, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "Costa, where on earth did you dig this woman up? Is this some kind of sick joke?"
Darian looked down at Nadia. She turned her head slowly, meeting his gaze with a look that dared him to tell the truth. Go ahead, her eyes seemed to say. Tell them I'm your maid. Let’s see who looks like a fool when the room realizes she has more backbone than every single person here.
A slow, deliberate realization washed over Darian Costa.
He didn't want to humiliate her anymore. He realized, with sudden, crystal clarity, that he was the luckiest bastard in this entire wretched ballroom.
Darian stepped forward, sliding his arm securely around Nadia’s waist, pulling her close in a gesture of absolute, undeniable solidarity. He looked dead into Arthur Pendleton’s terrified eyes.
"No joke, Arthur," Darian said, his voice dropping an octave into a lethal, velvet rasp. "Nadia is the only person in this city with enough spine to tell you the truth to your face. You should be taking notes."

Before Pendleton could formulate a response, the string quartet at the front of the hall struck up a heavy, sweeping waltz.
Darian didn't wait for permission. He swept Nadia away from the horrified circle of elites, pulling her out onto the center of the gleaming marble dance floor.
