Chapter 4 - The Waltz of the Untouchables

The massive crystal chandelier overhead cast a brilliant, prismatic shower of light across the polished floor as the orchestra swelled.
As Darian pulled Nadia into his arms, the initial stiffness in her posture melted away, replaced by a fluid, effortless grace that caught him completely off guard.
"You went off script," Darian muttered against her ear as they glided past a cluster of whispering socialites.
"Your script was boring," Nadia replied smoothly, her dark eyes flashing with triumph as she looked up at him. "And frankly, your punchline lacked imagination."
Darian let out a sharp, genuine laugh—a sound he hadn't made in years. The tension that usually defined his existence seemed to evaporate under the weight of her defiance.
Around them, the other couples on the dance floor slowly drifted toward the edges, clearing a space for the striking duo at the center. The plum silk gown flowed like liquid night with every turn, the low cowl back catching the light as Darian spun her outward and pulled her back against his chest.
For the first time in his life, Darian Costa didn't feel like a thug pretending to belong among high-society aristocrats. With Nadia in his arms, he felt invincible.
"You realize," Darian said quietly, his gaze locked onto hers as they moved in perfect synchronization with the music, "Arthur Pendleton will never speak to me again."
"Good," Nadia whispered back, a faint, radiant smile finally breaking through her stoic armor. "One less parasite to deal with."
"And your job at the estate?"
Nadia raised an eyebrow, her posture straightening even further. "Consider my resignation effective immediately. I think my talents are worth considerably more than minimum wage, Mr. Costa."
Darian felt a thrill run down his spine. The power dynamic had completely shifted. The maid who used to scrub his baseboards with a toothbrush was now the most dangerous, captivating woman in the room, and every powerful man in the ballroom was watching them with a mixture of envy and fear.

As the final notes of the waltz echoed through the vaulted ceiling, Darian dipped her low, holding her steady against the rush of adrenaline and applause that began to ripple through the edges of the crowd.
They had entered the gala as predator and punchline. They were leaving as monarchs.
