Chapter 4 - Blood and Roses

Chaos erupted.

The silence shattered instantly, replaced by a wall of deafening outrage. Shouts in Russian, Italian, and English bounced off the crystal chandeliers. Dmitri Kosoff slammed his fist onto a cocktail table, sending glasses flying, while several capos from the Chicago delegation leaped to their feet, their hands hovering dangerously near their waistbands.

"An insult!" a senior boss roared, his face crimson with fury. "You mock the syndicates! You mock a hundred bloodlines for a cleaning girl?"

Vincent Torino drew his firearm half an inch from its holster, his eyes darting frantically between Don Salvatore and Luca. "Boss, this is war. The Vulovs will pull their shipping lanes by morning. The alliance is dead."

"Let them try," Luca said, his voice dropping an octave, cold and absolute as winter ice.

He didn't let go of Luna’s hand. His grip was an iron shackle, anchoring her to the center of a hurricane. With his free hand, he slid his right hand inside his jacket, pulling out a heavy, platinum-and-diamond signet ring—the traditional Moretti heirloom reserved for the ruling matriarch—and held it out.

Across the room, Don Salvatore slumped back into his armchair. The old man closed his eyes, his chest heaving, his face pale. For three long seconds, the patriarch looked ancient, defeated by his own mortality and his son's unbreakable stubbornness.

Then, slowly, Don Salvatore raised a single, weathered hand, signaling his enforcers to stand down.

"If the Moretti name stands on strength," Don Salvatore’s raspy voice cut through the screaming mob like a blade, "then let it be known that my son has chosen the strongest survivor in this room."

The chaos subsided into a stunned, trembling whisper.

Katarina Vulov glared at Luna with pure, unadulterated venom, her eyes promising a slow and bloody vengeance before she turned on her heel and stormed out of the ballroom, her retinue scrambling to follow. Within minutes, the alliance representatives were filing out in tight, furious clusters, realizing the empire had just shifted its axis.

Luna stood frozen, tears blurring her vision as the glittering room emptied of its false princesses and terrified lords.

Luca pulled her closer, ignoring the shattered glass around their feet. He lifted her chin with his thumb, his green eyes burning with an intensity that chased away every shadow of her past.

"You really thought I was going to marry a stranger who didn't even know how to clean up after herself properly?" he whispered, a rare, breathtaking smile breaking across his severe face.

"I—I thought..." Luna choked out, a sob breaking through her lips. "I thought I was just invisible."

"You were never invisible to me, Luna," Luca said softly. He slid the heavy diamond signet ring onto her finger. It was slightly too big, resting loosely against her knuckles like a promise waiting to be fulfilled. "And now, you'll never have to hide in the shadows again."
