Chapter 5 - The Queen of the New Empire

Six months later, the Moretti estate looked entirely different.

The cold, intimidating marble halls had been softened by life. Sunlight poured generously through the tall French doors of the East Salon, illuminating fresh lilies, bright Persian rugs, and the sound of soft laughter echoing from the courtyard garden.

The great mafia war that the elders had predicted never materialized. Stripped of their unity by Luca’s ruthless financial restructuring and strategic consolidation of the ports, the rival syndicates had quickly realized that fighting the new Moretti regime was financial suicide. Dmitri Kosoff’s shipping cartel had folded within weeks, absorbed quietly into the expanding Moretti trade empire.

Today, the courtyard was filled not with armed capos and terrified heiresses, but with children laughing, the smell of authentic Mexican cooking drifting from the newly remodeled kitchens, and the warm, golden light of a late autumn afternoon.

Luna sat on the stone bench beneath the old oak tree, a soft cashmere shawl draped over her shoulders. Her mother and younger brothers, safely relocated from Michoacán into a sprawling, secure estate in California, were visiting for the weekend. Her mother’s arthritis was being treated by the finest specialists money could buy, and her youngest brother was proudly showing off his new English textbooks to the estate gardeners.

Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path.

A pair of familiar hands came gently to rest on her shoulders, sliding down to massage the tension from her neck.

"You're working too hard again," Luca’s deep voice murmured against her ear.

Luna leaned back against his chest, smiling as she looked down at the heavy platinum ring on her left hand. "I was just checking the ledger for the foundation we're opening in downtown Chicago. We funded three new schools this month, Luca."

Luca chuckled, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder. "You're turning my criminal empire into a philanthropic organization, mi amor. My father would roll in his grave."

"Your father," Luna replied playfully, turning in his arms to face him, "spent the morning teaching my little brother how to play poker on the patio. I think he’s happier now than he’s been in a decade."

Luca’s expression softened, that devastating, rare smile transforming his features. He reached out, gently tucking a strand of dark hair behind her ear—the exact same gesture he had made in the kitchen three years ago, when she was just a frightened girl scrubbing floors with a borrowed book in her pocket.

"He knows a good investment when he sees one," Luca whispered, leaning down to press his lips softly against hers. "The best one I ever made."

The wind rustled through the oak leaves above them, carrying the scent of fresh roses and a future built not on fear, but on a love that had defied an empire. Luna closed her eyes, knowing she was finally home.
