Chapter 3 - The Ultimatum in the Grand Library

With the master flash drive securely in my pocket, I walked down the sweeping marble staircase toward the grand estate library. The towering mahogany bookshelves, filled with leather-bound classics that my grandfather had collected over a lifetime, felt like a cathedral of lost integrity. Julian was still there, sitting casually behind the massive executive desk, pouring himself a fresh glass of bourbon as though nothing out of the ordinary had occurred.
The door creaked open, and Julian didn't even bother to look up immediately. "Look, Evelyn, if you're going to throw another tantrum about a simple haircut, save your breath. Kids get gum in their hair, hair grows back, and you're making a mountain out of a molehill."
I didn't answer right away. I walked slowly across the Persian rug, pulled out the heavy oak chair directly opposite him, and sat down. I reached into my pocket, placed a sleek black tablet on the center of the desk, and tapped the screen to play a synchronized, high-definition loop of the dressing room security footage.
The audio filled the quiet library with agonizing clarity: Nora’s terrified shrieks, Renata’s cruel taunts, the mechanical buzz of the clippers, and Julian’s cold, dismissive command for his daughter to stop making a scene.
Julian’s face instantly lost all color. The glass of bourbon slipped from his fingers, shattering against the heavy Persian rug, splashing amber liquid across his Italian leather shoes. He stared at the screen in absolute horror, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly as he realized that every single alibi he had concocted had just been incinerated.
"Evelyn... where... how did you—" Julian stammered, scrambling backward in his executive chair, his composure entirely shattered.
"You thought you could intimidate me into signing away my birthright, Julian? You thought you could terrorize my five-year-old daughter to break my spirit?" My voice was low, steady, and laden with lethal precision. "You lied to the police, you forged corporate documents, you embezzled millions into offshore accounts for your mistress, and you stood by while your family physically abused my child."
Before he could muster a defense, the library doors flew open, and Lady Eleanor marched in, flanked by Renata and Chloe, who looked smugly confident until they saw Julian’s pale, trembling face.
"What is the meaning of this shouting?" Eleanor snapped, leaning heavily on her diamond-encrusted walking cane. "Julian, tell your wife to stop making a scene in front of the staff. We have dinner guests arriving soon, and—"
"Shut your mouth, Eleanor," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor blade.
Eleanor gasped, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief that anyone dared speak to the matriarch of the Vance family in such a tone. "How dare you—"
"I said, shut up," I repeated, standing up to my full height. I tapped the tablet screen, freezing the image of Chloe holding the electric clippers next to a weeping Nora. "You all walked into a digital trap. Every second of what happened upstairs has been recorded, backed up, and transmitted directly to my legal team and the New York State Attorney General’s office."
May you like
Chloe’s confident smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a mask of blind panic. She grabbed Julian’s arm, her voice rising in hysteria. "Julian, tell her she’s lying! Tell her she can't do anything! Your mother said this family is untouchable!"
"The Vance family was untouchable," I said coldly, walking toward the grand double doors, "until you decided to wage war against the wrong woman. You have exactly three minutes to get out of my sight, or the police will be walking through those front doors to arrest every single adult in this room for child abuse, corporate forgery, and grand larceny."
